I stumbled across a print ad... maybe in Life Magazine, the other day... and now I can't find it.
I looked through all the Samba literature today.
Here's what it looks like.
Pearl White bus (I think)
Kinda zoomed in... meaning, you can only see the front half of the rack and most of the pop top.
I think there's a kid in the back... looking forward with a big gasping grin.
There's a pelican sitting on the rack... getting ready to eat a fish.
It's looking at the passenger's side of the bus... rear to the left... nose to the right.
Canvas "bag" is sitting in the rack.
If you are familiar wih it & can post a pic of it... much appreciated.

Different font.
That ad got me thinking about canvas rack covers.
I'be heard about them for SO-42... haven't seen one.
I've had a cover that was made out of the rubberized Bay tent floor material... leather straps like on tent stuff.
Everett... can you look for my old deleted ad pics & post here / add to Gallery?
I guess if canvas rack covers were around for subhatches... they maybe would have put them in an ad.
But then again, haven't seen one in an SO-42 ad.
Here's a non-westy cover... just for something to look at... because we like pictures

Those things are unobtanium. Ask Greg how long he's been looking for one.

I sold this rack at OCTO afew years back, it was for a generic 50's station wagon. It is nice thanks for posting .

Thank you very much for digging those up Everett.
Interesting how strap layout sorta flip-flopped (innie vs. outie)
The canvas one has the straps ~7-10" from the corner & the plastic one has the end straps very close to the corners.
At the time, I didn't have a rack to fit it to.
The person that has it now said it's too small for a bus & is probably a Beetle cover.
But, I found it at Randy's... laying right next to a Bay Westy... the tent was laying there too. Hmmm

I have the plastic one above. Got it from Esay e. I also found another one right after that. Both are the same size & shape. They fit the aluminum Bug rag perfectly.

My 65 so-35 had one. It was yellow canvas with the leather straps like the one above on the so-23. It was very tattered and ripped, but it was real. I had it in my hands.  Too long a story to tell it all here, but unfortunately the property had been cleaned up and loads of stuff dumped in the few days between first seeing the bus and being able to purchase/pick it up. Still makes me a little sick.

Greg placed a wanted ad for a canvas roof rack cover in 2009:

I think later (bay era?) rack covers are vinyly And a slightly different size as the racks are a different size.

my bug rack has places for the straps to attach.
on the front and rear bar a a couple inches from each end.
This is a pretty common bug rack, and I'm told it is a 'sunroof bug' rack, as it is a little taller than the shorter style, sits a little higher above the roof, more clearance if I put a bicycle on there.

| That cover is so baddass. There's probably some older person that remembers being the child on a travel trip through Europe that got sent up there to unfurl the cover to get grandma's cosmetic case or let the border checker inspect the luggage. They remember the scent and feel of the leather and canvas and the sound of the little bearing spinning and the pin coming out the hole on each strap making sure to slip each leather tip into its keeper...ahhhhhh...the good old days...sigh. |

Hi All,
I decided to make a canvas cover before the topic was started. Please take a look and tell me what you think?
Now I'm waiting for the natural skin stripes to put them on the cover. I should have them this week.
I will put more pics when I'm ready with riveting the stripes on canvas cover.
