Once a car goes into the yard in CA, its fate is sealed... unless a miracle takes place. In this rare car's case, I'm hoping it's the latter.

Glad you posted the VIN. This car was entered into the Harlequin Registry. Here is an article on the original owner: http://www.sfgate.com/cars/myride/article/1996-VW-Golf-Harlequin-4673506.php .

Just saw on Facebook a guy from PA is flying out to CA to buy the car, get it in once piece/running and drive it back home...

I'm thinking more like...why? But the dedication and work to get that car running and driving when it had one foot in death's door is pretty darn cool. Like watching those folks that fix old airplanes and fly them out of where they'd been sitting for decades.

What is interesting is that this was a running, driving car that was donated to some Charity,
who then turned around and simply dumped it at a Pick & Pull.
What's odd is Pick & Pull sells cars, but clearly nobody knew, or cared that these Harlequins are rare.
But then again it's AIII, not that great of a car even when new.
