Hey old dude that drinks to much after midnight and posts, then apologises, then just rambles on and on and on, what's your actual question? What would you like these fine people on the bay window forum to help you with? You want to get this old thread back on track about windshield rust repair so how about asking a question related to it, or post some pics of your rust you want to talk about?
I get the feeling your aching for a pissing match?

"Crash" bar? There is nothing in the nose of a Type 2 that will withstand a head-on collision. Hell, 20 years ago I taught my kids "Legs UP!" drills in case of a crash.
But I still drive it because I love it. |
have you ever done this repair? there is a DIESEL crash bar on the top of the windshield area, and a lower structure just inside the bumper....crash bar/inner support...call it what you will....late buses called the lower a "deformation panel"
a true head on you'll be hurtin for certain but there IS crash protection.
agree....this guy is just trolling....
go to home depot. get some spackle and roofing tar. get a new seal on the windshield and snap that bitch in the bus...now you're all set

Settle down spaz! Not everyone down here does incredibly stupid things...geez, we've got Georgia just to the north of us, and apparently they're fabricating swaybars out of rebar up there. Little bubble gum, touch of duct tape, couple of ball bearings, finish that up with some super glue, that ought to do it. |

Not lookin' ter pick a fight, NZ. I'll leave that to Aussies and Irish.
Nice job, Wasted. I wanna do that kind of work when I grow up.
VanOrange is what my kids named the bus when they were little; they're grown now, but it's still VanOrange.
I was serious about what I said before; the way Wasted Youth, Tcash, Pinetops and many others talked SamboSamba22 through his repairs, one at a time, was fantastic. Skills weighed in a couple of times, but I gather he is somewhat monosyllabic. And I did like the way the community browbeat Sam into painting his bumpers. "Patina", my ass. Rust is rust. Patina is on antique furniture.
To be clear: I was not seeking any of your approbation for how I am doing my rust repairs. I need to get the old van back on the road RIGHT NOW, today. I am scheduled to take it on a road trip with my son to Minnesota for a celebration of their one day of summer, August 1. Orwell84, you are correct; one needs to go camping when the occasion presents itself; the chance may not come again.
Yes, I know that the only true repair for rust is new steel. (see below). But I just don't have the time right now. I need to get the van on the road NOW to shake it down in the next month. It hasn't moved more than a few feet for 7-8 years. The last time I took it downstate, I barely made it home. My original Solex carbs were shot; I have had them rebuilt 3 times, the last time by a machinist who installed sleeves and bored them for the throttle shafts. No telling how many times previous owners had them rebuilt.
Windshield
Inside battery tray
Windshield fill
Fill leveled
New steel
So I will continue with sandblasting and J-B Weld fill, until I have the time to do the windshield correctly. At least I won't have water dribbling down on feet for 1800 miles. Each way. The only spot I can't think of a quick repair for is this big hole in the corner. If I only could get inside it.
Passenger side
Y'know, I forgot what my original question was. I would like to know, however, if there is any sort of internal bracing for the nose that will keep the weight of the spare from bending it?
And is there a list of vetted VW shops in the central US somewhere on Samba? I may need one on this trip.
Abscate, you made comment in one post on SamboSamba22's thread about being "in country and looking for Charlie" Who were you with?
Thanks to Tcash for the tutorial on how to past in photos. |

Thanks for the links, Tcash. I don't think I want to mount Roo bars on my bus, and the other thing looks like a version of a bike rack. I did see the attached on another thread.
While I'm sure it's effective, it's a bit - intrusive. I was hoping someone manufactured a brace that went inside the nose, where it wouldn't be seen. |

Obviously, I haven't mastered the art of pasting in photos yet. Let's try this again.
