I purchased a rear axle seal kit.
The kit came with with 2 paper-type gaskets, 2 o-rings (one small and one large), 1 seal, 1 spacer (looks like thin flat washer) and 1 cotter pin.

Before I put everything in the kit on my 74 Thing, should I?

My Thing did not have the spacer (flat washer) or the small o-ring. Am I missing them, or are they not used?

Thanks

For an IRS rear rear axle seal kit just use the seal, large o ring and the cotter pin-throw away the shims, small o ring and the paper gaskets.

Hi. And if you are servicing the rear wheel bearings (2 on each side) you would need an additional seal.
Hope this helps, Bill.

Thanks, I did actually have two kits.

What started out as replacing a leaking rear wheel cylinder has ballooned to
a) both rear cylinders,
b) rear axle seals,
c) turning rear drums
d) new rear shoes
e) discovering rear adjuster stars were frozen (now cleaned and working properly)
f) exploring front adjuster stars to discover they were also frozen,
g) deciding it was time to order new upper and lower ball joints and inner and outer tie rod ends.

All because my Thing had essentially been in storage since 2003.
This is the year I get to enjoy it!

Great. Amazing how it works out this way!
Retired, huh? The worst day of retirement is better than the best day at work. Comment?
