A '73 super beetle.

Been trying to figure why the oil leek. Last to fix was the gaskets to the oil pump. Yet to find if that the reason oil spitting everywhere back there. Won't know until start up a drive 'round.

Car won't start. Last try to push jump, was very low grumble, as though something was going, but was not. Ran just fine before change the oil pump gasket. Now, no spark from coil. New coil, no spark. Electric to coil from ignition. Starter turns, no spark out of coil.

? Question ?

Was running just fine, not change any of the electric wires when change oil pump gasket. Now why the no spark out of coil to the spark plugs?

...

Santa Claus gifted the car this last winter. Car drove the forty, or so, miles hOMe, from Sweet hOMe, OR. Lots of oil spitting. Previous owner of past seven years, spoke to change the gasket from the tranny to engine block. I thought of have to do so, so began to in hopes of the oil not be spitting all over the engine. Man in shop said if to drop the engine and the gasket need be replaced, oil be spilling everywhere when off tranny. No oil spill anywhere back there. Dropped the engine, put back to place, then, to figure why the oil spit. Changed the gasket of generator stand. Still oil spit. Read online of similar story, fellas crank pulley throwing oil all over, he found the oil pump gasket changed fixed trouble. So, change the oil pump gasket. Then, now, no electricity out of coil. Changed coil. Still no electricity.

Can please clear up this thought, what two wires come from the wire harness on left side of engine, coming from the front somewhere? One the ignition, the other? Those both go onto what charge of coil? Green wire from distributor goes to coil, what charge? Big, middle wire goes to top of coil. From coil goes wire to carburetor, and to a little nob out of side of engine near distributor, what's that nob? Carburetor does have spot for air to go to on the right side of that, is a wire needed to get over there too? I don't understand all the wire to this, and can't figure it out all to easily with the books for some reason. Will go check again.

I hadn't changed the wires at all after car was running just fine for afternoon drive out to country lake, but had done so after replacing coil. A light shows good color off the ignition wire, thought to be ignition, thicker black wire from left side engine, but show a very dull color from the other wire coming from the left side of engine wire harness. What is that wire? Does that need to have a bright light from the test light?

haven't left the key onto the new coil. Left on old coil? I don't think so. New coil no.

What wires go where? I connected how was on the old coil, but for some reason feel as mistakenly placed the wires. Did have the coil with plus and negative backwards as to how was originally, but connected accordingly. Can you fry a coil having wires on that thing wrong?

What are the two wires coming from the from front of car on the left hand side. One has good light when tested. The other, very dull light, but some. What are those?

Replaced the points, and condenser.

What is the wire connection sticking out of a plug like thin down by the distributor to in engine block? The oil level..

That's the oil pressure switch - goes to red light on dash - grn? wire from the 2 wires coming from front.

You should have only 1 wire from '-' on coil to distrib condensor. 2 to 3 wires on '+' side of coil - 1 black wire from the 2 wires coming from the front, 1 black wire going to the carb and splitting to go both sides - shut-off solenoid on left, and choke on right of the carb.

yes = goes to red light on dash - grn? wire from the 2 wires coming from front. The other black - goes to coil +

ok. That clears top that... Now, if light test shows good current coming from the ignition from the front, but now spark out of main center coil wire when held just above metal, new coil too, could it be anything but the coil causing no spark there?

Condensor bad? Points opening? Ground strap on tranny clean?

Running!

Thanks. Head all fogged up, I guess.

Hope that the oil doesn't leak no more with oil pump gasket changed. One who was under engine thought maybe leak be from case connection, left to right. Nuts a little loose. If appears to be leaking from the case seam, is there a heat resistant type glue to seal leak, so not to have pull whole engine apart?

Clean the oil off the motor and watch carefully, there's a number of spots that can leak and the oil runs around and appears elsewhere to make it hard to know where it's coming from. Curil-T is a high temp sealant, but would work best between clean surfaces, rather than smeared onto a surface.
