So we took the '72 out for a spin yesterday. All stock motor, carb set-up. Was driving fine for a while, then all of a sudden the motor starts max reving. Stopped, turned it off and checked it out. All throttle gear from the pedal, through the accelerator cable, to all of the throttle linkage and springs all seem to be functioning perfectly. But as soon as it starts up the motor redlines RPM's. Nothing seems jammed, disconnected or broken.
What could be causing this? Anybody ever had this happen before, because I sure haven't. Any advice would be helpful.
Thank you in advance.
Joe.

If your carbs are jetted rich a bad vacuum leak can cause it to rev high under no load. Sometimes the engine will rev like crazy and then almost die and then repeat.

Thanks for the advice folks!
I checked all vacuum hoses. They seemed in tact.

I will check throttle butterflys next, but it is a dual carb setup so could one, of the two, unattached butterflys be the culprit?

yes- as it would wedge the throttle open. and feed the balance tube fuel.
