Just wanted to share this tutorial here for anyone who wants an easy overview on how to adjust their valves.

Moderators note:
When the notch in the fan is lined up with the zero. TDC (top dead center).
The piston can either be on the Compression stroke or the exhaust stroke.
You want the piston to be on the Compression stroke. Pull the distributor cap off and make sure the rotor is pointing to the number 1 spark plug wire.

So I can adjust my valves that easy? Hmm. Not the way Amskeptic taught me.
Maybe Erb has a video on this I could watch.

Thanks for the edit mod! I forgot to include that in the video. I'll try to put an annotation in the video.

That video has potential. It's just not there yet. I look forward to it when you get it all sorted out. Maybe run it by a member like busdaddy or Aeromech before you release it. It's all in the details. Have seen so many of these type of videos where people miss a step or omitted something. How and why. Step by step. And it's a Bus Laughing

Don't forget all the tools needed. That 13mm wrench not gonna work on the fan so well. And a nice long screwdriver might help taking the bail off. Cheers.

I just put it in fourth gear & roll the car backwards until the crankshaft rotates 180* & then adjust the valves on the next cylinder.

Never turn the engine by the bolt on the end of the crankshaft. It is all too easy to accidentally loosen the bolt or snap it off, either of which can bring a lot of grief.

I wouldn't loosen any of the nuts until I knew for sure a particular valve actually needed adjustment. If you loosen the nuts before you check the adjustment you may miss the fact that one or more of the valves is tightening up over time.

One should also check the adjustment again after tightening the nuts in case the adjusting screws turn a bit.

With spring rocker spacers, you can also slide the rockers off to the side and check for wear on the valve stem tip. If the tips are worn concave you can not accurately adjust the valves with a feeler gauge, as you are apt to be many thousandths too loose.

That's good info on the crankshaft. Just doing what my teacher taught me. Intriguing. Something to consider I suppose. Will take that into to consideration when I do my valves today. Thanks guys.

And a nice long screwdriver might help taking the bail off.
Never, wrap a shop rag around the wire bail and give it a yank.

I just put it in fourth gear & roll the car backwards until the crankshaft rotates 180*.
Kids don't try this at home if you live in San Francisco.

Good luck

Why not? I have been using whatever lever is handy for four decades at this point and never once had any problem at all. Usually it is just going to be either a screwdriver or end wrench as they are going to be at hand, but a short nail bar, smallish chisel, or any of an assortment of tools will work as well

How often do you change your valve cover gaskets?

Why, because you'll scratch the valve cover. At least wrap a rag around that thing.
