1971 bus
I quit...
Just put in a new steering coupler and shift bushings this weekend.
They seem fine.
The next day; it's raining.
The wipers are running slow and I'm driving.
I put them on high speed and blow a fuse (#11), wipers stop and engine
stutters. When I roll to a stop sign the engine dies but I can restart it fine.
I test this at home in the driveway.
Wipers off the windshield.
Engine running.
Wipers on low speed, OK.
Wipers on high speed, fuse #11 blows killing wipers and engine shuts off.
Engine will start right back up though.
Dead short in the wiper motor?
Why would the engine die, because a line runs through the ignition switch?
Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. |

Likely more than one issue, could be a short in the wiper system, or rediculously siezed pivots and linkage. But when the fuse blows the load is gone so why would that effect the engine?, time for a drive with a volt meter plumbed in to see what's happening. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

When you move the steering column out of the way to put the new rubber steering coupling in AND you don't disconnect the wires (just set it up across the seats) things can happen.
It appears two wires on the back of the wiper switch were very close or touching, one brown, one black.
I pried the two tabs apart so the wires had some clearance, reassembled and it seems fine now. Low speed, fine. High speed, fine. Now I just need to get a new supply of fuses tomorrow.
I have always said if a problem just crops up, look at what you worked on last
Thank You.
Sincerely,
Mr. Dumas |

The wiper spindles are likely close to seizing. Time to pull the assembly out and clean them real good then re-grease them. _________________ 1972 Westy Hardtop/Type-4 2056cc
