I noticed the fuel pump, you may want to make a lil part like this for both sides of the pump. It will keep that pin in place.

Wow my exact issue... a 2 notch crank pulley just as shown above and I was looking to find TDC to set my valves and the #1 cylinder lines up with the 7.5 degree mark, and was concerned it was not to the left like the TDC mark on my later 65 Forty-Horse motor??
Just got a numbers matching 64 bug and the valves were super loud. So I lined up the distributor with the #1 firing and then rocked the motor while looking at #3 valves (oppose side) and when they went neutral/flat/lined up... the crank pulley lined up exactly at the 7.5 degree mark, so this seems to be very close to TDC? And yeah the dang Muir book had some particular advice on 40HP long vs. short stud and wider valve gaping to .010, and .008 inch? I used .006 inch like I have forever. Thanks Kpottorff, I adjusted at the 7.5 degree mark and sounds like I should be ok?
I will try and up load the pulley before I lined up with the distributor #1 notch and rocked the values for #3. Am I missing anything? Thanks again this has been "bugging" me!

If you set the valves while pulley was at 7.5 BTDC mark for #1 and for #3 instead of TDC, you'll be fine. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I have this same 2-notch pulley in my '67 stock 1500.
I found true TDC by removing #1 spark plug and using a pencil (carefully!) down the cylinder and rotating the engine back and forth till I found TDC.
Then I marked the pulley and set the valves there. Once valves were adjusted...went back and static set the timing as suggested using the marks and a test light. Miss fires went away and has been running like a champ since! |

Thanks Uker... so the pencil thing... the TDC is when the pencil stops pushing out, and starts to go back down that is TDC? Are you in PW on LI in NY (I am on LI also)? I am guessing your TDC is different from my 64 horse motor but where did TDC end up compared to the 7.5 mark? Upload a pic? thanks |

Since the valve covers are already off, line up the pulley mark and look at #1 valves, both should be "out" if near TDC #1, but will NOT both be out if at TDC #3.
And paint on a BTC (bottom dead center) mark to help align for adjusting valves for #2 and #4.
