Aloha folks!
some of you have seen this thrust washer break like I did, the plastic becomes brittle: it turns from white to yellow.
I have the opportunity to have it custom made in a special bronze that resists up to 500°F, but for just a couple units, the price is outrageously expensive vs the $2 plastic washer.
If I can order 50 washers, 2 needed per automatic transmission, the price will drop quite a lot. I'm looking to see if people would be interested, ball park should be 70 bucks with shipping for a pair of bronze washers. I'm looking for a few interested people, and I'll keep the rest and put in in the classifieds, I'm fully aware not 50 will sell on this group buy .
The washers will be plain, no oil groove, I suggest to use a little stone burr and slightly carve 2 notches at 180° on each side, offset by 90° from each side like on the original part .The manufacturer engineer doesn't want to mess with it, but it's fairly easy to do.
Let me know if anybody would be interested in this initiative or if this is a bad idea?

It depends if I can find other people interested, otherwise it's gonna cost me way too much money I'll never get back... _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

They won't but I can always add them myself with a Dremel and a stone burr to replicate the original shape. It doesn't have to be perfectly symetrical, it is just meant to have oil in these pockets to feed the oil film between the moving parts.
I'm waiting for the final quote for 50 see if we can make this happen.

Put me in at 4. I'll go up to 10 if there are not enough takers and it'll complete the buy.
EDIT: sorry I had the completely wrong impression of the cost... based on what you say below. _________________ The wise man learns from history, the fool from experience.

Hi Tom!
Thank you for the links, I've asked quite a few places, but not those. A lot never answered, which I noticed is quite common with US businesses. The economical situation is still too good...
After talking to TK, he suggested Delrin as a material, it will be cheaper and will outperform bronze. I think I'll look up this direction, if we do something, might as well do it right, and better than original, the costs might be cheaper too.
I got the final quote for the bronze ones, it could be down for 50 bucks for a pair delivered to your place (but like I said, I'll probably go the Delrin way now)
Porsche just shipped my washers yesterday, great :/ Good thing I stopped by my local VW mechanic to chat stories, he had bags of them in stock, I would have never guessed! I got 2 for free so I can put the transmission back together, it has to be done this weekend absolutely, but I have 2 other trannies to rebuild later on spare time. When I get my washers, I'll give 2 back to the mechanic
I found out there were 2 different white washers, made with a seemingly different material from VW.
One is from factory BRH1 and the other one from factory BRH4, or they are different batches in time. Very interesting thing to notice. We put them under the digital caliper jaws, and they measure 1.3 mm in fact. I will have to double check with my own caliper when I get to my shop one of these days.
BRH4 is more grainy feeling and feels more brittle, is stiffer.
This washer is a custom made one that my mechanic begged this other guy to sell to him before he could buy the last washers from VW. This other guy doesn't want to be known for selling these that are for personal use, so I can't tell the source. Notice their lack of grooves, so it might not be critical to have none since it's a plastic /metal assembly.

I don't know if this is germane to the topic, but when I dismantled the 01M transmission from my TDI's donor Jetta, the only internal damage I found was this same spacer/washer. It was broken in several sections, but was a green plastic. From memory it appeared to be the same size and thickness as those in the 010 trans. |

Hi Casey!
interesting, but if it breaks, it might not be good to use it. I believe if it's color coded, there must be different thicknesses, I'll look it up just in case

So today I stopped by the old VW mechanic, he has dozens of automatic transmissions just laying open on the floor, on shelves, everywhere!
I also received the black thrust washer 010323161A, BLH1 like the white one that broke in my transmission.
I found a thrust washer on the pile of stuff he had, made out of aluminum bronzed. It is from an older 003 automatic transmission. ( 003323161 and the ones with tabs on the oil pump pictured below might be 003323161A ) All NLA and replaced by the white plastic thrust washer 010323161A

Ok I opened the 095 Eurovan 1993 transmission,
The washer is bigger, 63x45mm. It was green.
If anybody needs parts, lemme know

Edit: it looks like the conversation thread got cleaned up a bit above, but for cost concerns, they won't be done in bronze but in POM-Delrin
Aloha folks and a happy new year to y'all
For the Blue Moon this year, I just got the thrust washers made out of POM-Delrin.
I'll put them up for sale in february, I'm about to leave soon on a trip, I'll deal with it when I come back.
I have 200 of them but can get more
They'll be at $12 a pair with shipping included.

The symptoms of a broken trust washer are leaking or noise? I have a ticking/tocking that increases in speed with rpm. Seems to be coming from the trans but not the TC or flexplate. Is one just behind the TC seal so it's relatively easy to replace with the engine out? |

Just noise.
I had one broken above the oil up, there is a bump on the cast that hits the little check valve boss from what I remember, it made a "tokotokoko" noise.
It seems like the supplies of VW/Porsche ones completely dried out in the US :/ _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.
