Will that be safe on the original factory paint? I'd kind of like to strip it back to whatever is left of the original paint it left the factory with.

Definitely not an exact match, just one that I determined was close enough. I don't think Wolfsburg West sells your original rim color -- which would be L87 Pearl White -- but they do have quite a few other original colors in spray cans.

Fairly productive long weekend! Saturday morning I picked up the engine and interior parts and brought them home, just in time to take inventory of what I needed to look for at Bug Out on Sunday.
There's an engine in the back of my Dodge truck, so now it's basically the same as Little Red Wagon.
Engine on the stand! gonna go through it and hopefully get it back in the car soon.
Reunited with her seats! The covers are all shot but the frames are in good shape.
First time since buying it I've been able to sit in the seats and make "vroom vroom" noises!
I did a quickie rattlecan job on the wheels, it's amazing what a difference it made in the overall appearance! I've got another set I'm going to properly redo and have new tires mounted on eventually.
Rain hurt the swap meet turnout at Bug Out, but I did find a couple things. Most importantly I got my heater channels and pans! Time to make sparks fly.
my favorite part of the weekend, when you sit back and drink a beer and reflect on what you got done.

Finally got a couple things done this weekend!
I stripped my engine down to a longblock. I'm happy with the end play so I'm not going to split the case. I'll pull the heads for a thorough cleaning, then reassemble it with fresh gaskets and seals.
Degreased some parts and killed some weeds in the driveway. Multitasking!
The PO brought me the original owner's manual packet! It came from Ward Volkswagen, it's always been a Richmond car!
Sunday evening I discovered that Easy Off oven cleaner is perfect for removing the crappy respray! Sprayed it on, waited 5 minutes, rubbed it with a green scrubby pad, then rinsed with water. Back to OG Ruby red!! I wish I'd discovered this earlier in the weekend.

Most of the original paint on the tin looks in pretty good shape so I'm going to leave it be, but the heater boxes are rust colored. I'm debating leaving them as is or repainting them. What color would they have been painted from the factory?

Had Tuesday off, so Monday night I played in the shop. The rear apron had been replaced at some point in it's life with one from a white car that had been painted blue. It bugged me so I just hit it with some red primer for now. Looks much better, til I can find a suitable match to aged Ruby red.
Then I turned my attention to that ugly blue fender. It actually appears to be Ruby red underneath, but the blue is not budging despite all the various methods to remove it that I tried.
I've always loved the wild paintjob on the Empi Inch Pincher Too, so had the bright idea to turn my fender into a tribute to that car, If it doesn't match, might as well have some fun with it!
Then after it dried overnight I gave it a wet sanding and buffing to blend it better. Didn't come out too bad, and looks a lot better than that nasty blue!

Haven't updated in awhile because I haven't had time to mess with it in awhile. I finally tore into the engine so I can give it a good lookover and retorque everything. I'm really glad I decided to pop the heads off to have a look inside, because I found a washer laying inside the #3 cylinder! I'm guessing it was from when the PO started tearing the engine down 20 years ago, no evidence that it ever ran with the washer there! Once I got everything torqued I started putting it back together with some fresh seals. My goal is to get it off the stand before I go visit my parents for Christmas, that way I can return the stand I borrowed from Dad.

Following your progress ....for pointers on my 66 project. You're fortunate to have more than half-decent bumpers front a back. Out here in mid-western Canada, most older bugs appear to have been towed by the center of the front and/or rear bumper at least once in their life!!

400 bucks is quite a deal. A set of lowbacks and a set of used OG bumpers are worth more than that. Nice catch on that washer! That wouldn't have been good. Even if you don't bring this one back to perfect, it's better than it absorbing back into the earth as different forms of oxides!  |

Nice save, keep at it.
For what it's worth, I have a Bahama Blue '65 with all original paint in the trunk, and my defroster tubes are also completely sprayed over. Definitely factory. |

Thanks! Yeah for the price I paid for it I figured I could easily make my money back on just a handful of parts. I can also learn on it and not feel too bad. The bumpers aren't originals unfortunately, I'm guessing they're repros from the 90s. They have the black grommets between the overrider tubes and blades. They've aged to match the rest of the car pretty well though!

Spent some time with the 66 this weekend. First of all I pushed it out into the yard for the obligatory Christmas photoshoot that comes with owning a red and green bug:

While it was out of the garage I took some new pics of it:
Then I pushed it back into the garage and got to work on buttoning up my engine!
Got it almost ready to come off the stand, but was in for an unfortunate surprise when I went to install the nice NOS German muffler that came with the car:
Turns out it's too short for my engine! I guess it must be for an earlier car or something, womp womp. I think there's an old header in Dad's shed that I can steal in a couple weeks when I'm there for Christmas at least.
Next on the agenda is to get the engine compartment cleaned up, replace the tin seal, and my axle boots while I have easy access. Then the motor can go back in!

Very clever idea with the Inch Pincher Too's paint graphics for your right rear fender paint scheme.
Nice work with your "quickie" 2-tone spray can wheel painting. IMO the original 2-tone scheme looks best.
Your new muffler would be a 40hp fresh air. It's narrower due to the crankshaft having 64mm stroke; 5mm shorter stroke than your 1300's 69mm on both sides of the engine = 10mm total =~ 1/3". Though in your shot the lost space looks a bit more than 1/3".
From the body/paint Forum on theSamba, a close color match to Ruby Red is Rust-o-leum Regal Red. You could buy a spray can to mist over some of your bare areas. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=424324
Thinking about a quick freshening up of the rust on the bumpers using balled-up aluminum foil and Coke? 10 minutes each would make a big difference, then paint over with gloss clear for rust protection.
