Great idea for the system pressurizer, thanks for the tip! I have a vacuum bleeder but it hasn't proven itself to work very well. The main thing I need a helper for is actually bolting the new master cylinder in.

That didn't cross my mind about installing the master cylinder as did it myself. I been wracking my brain since this trying to remember how, I think I set it in carefully and put the nuts on with my fingers, not sure on the last. Remember it being a fiddly operation. Got to be some way to hold it, how about a welding magnet or two?

How to install a master cylinder by yourself:

Clean the threads in the master cylinder flange and on the mount bolts really well so that they easily thread together by hand. Insert the bolts through the chassis, making sure the bolts pass through their spacers inside the Napoleon's hat -- do not install the master without these spacers. Next, from under the car or better yet from above with the fuel tank removed, carefully position the master so you can grasp and turn the ends of the mount bolts by their threads and get them both started into the master -- they don't need to go in very far, just enough so they don't fall out as you let the master sit in place. Once both mount bolts are started into the master, go back around inside the car to finish screwing the bolts in and tighten to spec. Carry on with installing the brake lines, switches, etc.

Nope, haven't gotten to mess with it yet. There are several other projects ahead of the bug right now.

Yes, I know how that is, right now Ruby has to wait.

Did you see Matthew Henricks share one of his projects taking attention away from his? I found it neat and interesting seeing another aspect of life.

I didn't see it, what's he working on? My Vespas have been taking most of my shoptime recently, got to get them ready for riding season.

Well, the time has come to wrap up this thread. It's been over 2 years since I've worked on it, I can't even remember the last time the tires touched the ground. It's just more of a project than I'm able to or care to take on, so it was just taking up space. I wasn't necessarily planning to sell the car, but the right caretaker came along. On Friday evening I half jokingly posted a pic of the car looking more like a storage shelf on Instagram asking if anyone wanted to buy it for $1 per CC. Not long after I got a text from my friend, who was legitimately interested in it! We struck a deal, and the next morning he texted back to say it was a go. So I knocked the cobwebs off and put the wheels back on, lowering it off the jackstands after over 2 years. I de-stickered it, moved the roof rack over to my 73, and gathered up all the loose parts and packed them safely inside. I tucked it back into it's spot in the back of the garage for the last time, sat in the driver's seat and had a beer and some reminiscing. Sunday morning they came with a trailer to whisk her away to her new home.

I'm a little bummed that I wasn't able to get it over the finish line myself, but I'm glad that I was able to save it from rotting away behind a shed. I'm very happy about the new caretaker though, he's going to be working on it with his two sons! I'm so excited for his boys to have the same experience I did with my dad while working on my 73! I hope this car is as special to his family as the 73 is to mine. And since it's a friend that bought it, I'll still be able to take it for a rip around the block once they get it on the road.

I do kinda miss the car, but I am glad to have the space it was occupying back. Now I have room to really tear into my Lambretta project as soon as my lift arrives! Also, after I rearrange the shop I'll be a lot more inclined to drive the 73 since it won't be such a pain in the ass to get out! Anyway, on to the last photo dump...

Sorry to hear you couldn't finish her up yourself, but glad it's in good hands and will provide others good memories, and likely a few curse words. Laughing

Well, kind of a bummer, hopefully the boys enjoy rebuilding the Beetle and you get to drive it in the future.
