I've always welded with a wool blanket covering everything. I keep a bottle of water near by so I can spit on the welds (or fire) when needed.

Save the trucks! I think it's great what you're trying to do. We need more bay scabs and dcs rolling around.

best of luck. I really don't think the ends justify the means. oddball, rare split? sure....but a bay single cab? meh....

remember.....this is a bus on top of a bus in terms of the bed structure. there is more rust than you can imagine once you pull the skin off of it. the bed frame will be toast as well.

VW photos not hosted on VW website = big bummer.

The truck is now stripped and flipped. Rear beam cut off. Now starts the long road of sanding, cutting, welding, and much more.

I would have thought jacking it way up in the back & sliding the new section under it would be easier to line everything up and weld back together than tipping the new section on it's side and lineing it up. Keep moving foward !!

Please do some research on Mattress fires! They can smolder undetected for a long period of time, before bursting into flames! You could be done for the night and fast asleep in bed.

Took off a home made front beam. Made some outriggers and started welding in some rough frame patches. They will do the job.

Ive been meaning to buy one forever now. Im limited by the very poor electrical service in my garage and of course my wallet. I have the cheapest welder you can buy from harbor freight. Yes, it looks like garbage. But I never plan on selling this truck.

Ah yes...bad electrical. I had that in my backyard...every time you press the trigger, the fuse blows. I've now moved up front Laughing I had that welder too, its not the best but for a work truck(?) its fine.

Great project. 23 and ready to prove the world wrong, very original.

Here's how this will play out.

1. "Time to prove all these old a-holes wrong"
2. "I can do this"
3. "Dang, this is taking more time than I thought"
4. "Whaaat? This isn't right..this structural welding stuff is hard"
5. "Hey...that babe is CUTE"
6. "She's so great..I love spending time with her"
7. "Aww cmon mom - I AM working on the VW"
8. "I'll take the round diamond ring...WOW that's a lot of VW parts"
9. "Ok mom - I'll move it out behind the garage"
10. "YOURE PREGNANT?"
11. "Yea - I'll get back to that bus soon"
12. "Wow - weddings are expensive"
13. "I can't believe Johnny is in grade school ALREADY"
14. "Hey - any of you guys have the number for a scrap metal guy? The wife's been naggin me about that VW again"

Seriously. Best of luck. Keep the pictures coming! Nothings impossible. Pointless maybe, not impossible Wink

My amazing girlfriend happens to love the truck. Her wonderful daughter loves it too. They are both great help and motivation.
Also, when my whole family moves off grid onto some awesome land, we will have plenty of room for this project and more.

Ambitious project, nice job! I had a crap welder like that - did the best I could and when I moved up in the welder world it was amazing how good my welds suddenly were. I figure all that practice with a crap welder must have helped.

Off the grid? Another piece of the puzzle falls into place Wink
