I did a bunch of research on here before attempting this and I'm positive I've done this right.
- I connected the air nipple on my fan housing to one end of the charcoal canister
- Other end has 2 nipples. One went to a T that connected the fuel vapor lines to the canister.
- The other one I connected to a nipple that I added to the lid of my Weber carb air filter. I put a flame trap in that hose as well.
So air from the fan is blowing into the canister, and pushing any fumes that have accumulated in the canister into the carb where they get combusted.
Well after doing all this I went to fill up the tank to see if my fuel smell situation was improved. It was actually much worse.
When I got home I noticed some dripping from under the vehicle. A sniff test showed it was gas. Looks like it is coming from where the gas tank would be. I crawled under the car and the dripping definitely seems like it is coming from the gas tank compartment.
Here is my theory. My tank already had some minor leaks that weren't making it to eyeball range, thus the fuel smell. Doing my canister mod pushed some air into the fuel vapor lines, increasing the pressure, and making the leaking worse. I've noticed that after sitting a little, the leak has slowed down. Taking my car out of the garage and leaving it on an incline made it stop.
So I think I'm going to have to replace the tank.
Does anyone have any further insight into this? Does it sound like a tank leak or could it be hose leaks behind the firewall?
Thank you. |

Have you checked the vent hose(s) connecting to the top of the tank? These are the same crappy hose type the factory used for fuel hoses, and have the same susceptibility to alcohol fuel. I would suspect those first. With a full tank, these are under liquid fuel, and any change in venting could cause them to leak. _________________ '71 panel, now with FI
