I'm a newbie to my Thing and I've enjoyed getting back into working on VW's! I just finished rebuilding my steering column to get the horn to work again! While rebuilding the top half I found I had severely corroded copper contacts for the horn and shined them back up with steel wool. The prob I have now is a annoying squeak every time I turn the steering wheel! My questions are:
1. Could it be the newly cleaned copper contacts?
2. Would a little dab of dielectric grease solve my problem?

There is supposed to be a gap between the base of the steering wheel and the column or your contact for horn on the base of the steering wheel and on the turn signal switch will wear. You will have to loosen the steering column from the body (two 8mm bolts), and then push it down further to get the gap. It is outlined in the Bentley Book |

This is my current steering wheel gap. Seems on par with others I've seen posted. |
