well you can lead a horse to water, but you can't force him to drink. trust me, rust repair is NOT fun, or cheap. again, that 1000.00 bus will cost you years to make it to that 5-8K bus.
trying to save you from the same mistakes I made....I bought my first bus at 11....I have been down this road. but whatever. once you walk backwards a few times, you'll get it.....best of luck |

When I was looking for a bus, I did the math. A $1000 or $1500 bus is going to cost WAY more than a decent bus even if you spend $7 or 8K.
You think you will do the work yourself so it will be cheap, but in the end that bus will cost you way more.
I spent $7500 on my 77 Westy and it only needed tires and fuel lines. |
I know that, but I can't get 7 or 8000 dollars. This is the best I can do right now. A cheap piece of junk bus is fine by me and I could really care less about rust. As long as the frame is there, I'm fine with holes all about. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

you're missing the point....
point is a clean bus holds its value. a bus that has an amateur restoration will never sell for any money...they are like running/driving parts buses. globespotter now has a 12K bus, without the ass ache of shitty aftermarket parts/rockers etc....

My advice is to look and wait for at least a dry rust free or not a lot of rust bus that you can work on mechanically. Good luck - and I mean that sincerely. |
Thanks,
we'll see what happens. I mean I don't want a bus that needs whole floors, both rockers, slider track, and dog legs done, but I don't care if it needs a dog leg and a rocker or if it needs floor patches. I'm gonna wait and see... _________________ '67 Beetle L41

if the bug is the money sucker then just think about who the bus is gonna double your money sucker...listen to skills, he's probably the only mechanic in your neck of the woods worth spending money on. Wish you were out here. I can take show you three dry buses sitting in fields within 40 minutes of my house.
But, I do understand where you are coming from. Sometimes it is worth it to make the road trips in a car/bus/truck that has holes whistling cold/hot air up your crotch. You just can't ever get those days back... no way. You can spend ten fuggin' years build up a nice bus on a crappy income and never get to use it.
So if you're good with a banged up, Swiss cheese bus with a floppy headliner, painful seats and all... and you make that killer road trip with some sweetness around the edges with your favorite someone, then I say do it. But the caveat is that you loose any right to complain about any of the things you decided to ignore... bad brakes, questionable fuel lines that burn another bus to the ground, or rusted jacking points that collapse when you try to change that 14 year old bald tire.
Then, of course, the VW community will drown your eyeballs in grapefruit juice, spit loathing step-mother hate on your name and finish with a high British ass-flogging until you are old and grey.
The choice is yours! |

In honesty, My step-father didn't want to restore it so he went on about how it was a piece of junk and how it was gonna be a waste of time. It had a solid frame, ran like a top, and had everything there. It hadn't been registered since 1986 either. Well when Kenny came to my house to buy an engine, I said $2000 and he could have it. Well Kenny worked my step-dad down to $1200 including all the parts we had put in it from a parts lot we had recently bough (it was filled completely with parts and hubcaps) saying it was a parts bus. Then he tried selling it for $3500-$10000...then to $1900. I regret selling that so much...should have never listened to the step-dad _________________ '67 Beetle L41

Here's the thing, it seems like the only things available in your neck of the woods for $1000-$1500 are parts busses. You may need to find a way to earn more money so you can up your ante so to speak. Maybe you need a job, or a second job if you've already got one.
Read through this thread here
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0
Does it give you any ideas? Maybe call up Mr. Skills, or some other shop in your area to see if they need someone to help out a bit. That way you can earn more money towards a decent bus to start with, and on top of that you'd gain experience and knowledge.
Such initiative would bring you closer to your goals. Much closer than any of those POS parts busses you're looking at. Just my opinion anyway. _________________ 1978 CEII Get-away hightop |

If it is at all possible to pick up a dry CA or AZ bus body it may be worth the shipping for you. The buses I looked at here in the east were pretty rotted, so I ended up buying my Bug in Northern California and my Bus in BC.
The bug I flew out and drove back, and the bus I had shipped via rail.
Again, do the math. If you could get a good deal on a rust free bus, add say $1000 or so for shipping, you may be way ahead of the game.
When I looked at a rotted bus here, in my mind I tallied what it needed and estimated costs, and it pretty quickly got to a figure that was higher than getting a better bus from the west and shipping.
Great deals are getting harder to find, but they do come up. I got a few guys here to look for me. A finders/inspection fee may be worth it. _________________ 1977 Westfalia - October 2015 - Current

I feel like this is the best deal you will find in New England:
https://hartford.craigslist.org/cto/6134476643.html
Could sell the mid and rear seats, or the whole camper interior to get back some money.
Its double your budget but sounds like what you are willing to take on and not a complete train wreck. Start collecting beer cans, rolling change, donating blood, mowing lawns, selling the old comic book collection (you know you aren't gonna ever read em again), etc etc. _________________ 1971 STD BEETLE- DD-1st car, 1st love. keepin' it stock! 1600DP, Solex 34-3 Mexi Bosch SVDA Dist NOW w/POINTS

I like that one, Rockorod71. Very doable, especially with all those spare parts.
At the risk of having the wrath of the Sambanistas on me, I'd contribute $100 to the purchase. NOT a fund-me thing, but more of a Fund-You, since 67ctbug didn't start it.
Anyone else interested? With 20 of us, it will make up the difference between budget and selling price. _________________ -Kent-

Hi 67ctbug,
When I saw the picture of your 71 Westy I thought that it was my super rusty 1971 Westy that I am currently restoring.

67ctbug,
I am definitely on your side here but I've also been where you are. As a 29 year old who has spent the last 14 years doing what you're trying to do, let me put out a few points I've learned:
• Rusty bodies are easy enough to repair with time and patience (or money) but rusty frames are not. And rusty frames tend to go hand in hand. If you have a rusty frame you can't afford to repair, no matter how much money you put into something, you'll never get it back.
• Unless you are a master mechanic with a ton of time on your hands, a $1,000 beater will always...ALWAYS cost you more in the long run than a "rough" $4,000 runner. There is a point of diminishing returns on the quality of a vehicle and when you get below a certain amount you're basically buying scraps. That amount, to me, seems to be around $3,000 for busses.
• Repairing things can be done for little or no money. REPLACING things can not. If you buy an incomplete bus you are guaranteeing you will have to buy the replacement parts. Even if they're cheap, they add up.
A few examples to better illustrate my points:
• I bought a complete 1972 Jeep J2500 my freshmen year of college for $400. It was rough, but it was all there. I spent many evenings under that truck and it taught me how to work on cars. I put about $1,500 into it over 3 years and then sold it for $1,500. During that time, I bought a 1977 Jeep Wagoneer for parts because it had a transmission I needed. I paid $1,100 for it but before I could get to working on it, it basically started rusting away in my driveway. I could never keep up with the rust and ended up losing my ass on it 2 years later.
• I purchased a complete 1975 CB750F for $1,000 with a seized engine. I rebuilt it for $400 worth of parts and then sold it, in amazing condition, for $2,500. I then used that money to purchase a running, rough, incomplete 1978 CB750F for $1,500. By the time I had found all the pieces I needed, I was at $2,300 before I even got it running right. That is now my dad's pride and joy but I shutter to think of how much I have into it. _________________ 1968 Westy Tin-Top

So I purchased my Westy for $1650. Complete, running on one cylinder, need lots of love to become road worthy. Almost two years later, after I quit counting, I'm probably around $7k into it.
I love it. And there is all kinds of things I could replace or do to increase the betterment of my driving experience.
In 6 months of buying my solid '59 Single, I'm nearly $4k in it, with parts all over, Flintstone floors, and a decent amount of body work needed.
Buy cheap, which I did on the truck, it adds up quickly.
As for the bus, there are deals out there, and I do believe I stole it at the price I paid. But it all adds up quickly. $2500 up, anything less you'll lose your motivation. Just my opinion, good luck mate. _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.
