Hi all,
I'm hoping you all can post some pictures of rust that is either on your bus and / or rust that you had to deal with during the restoration process. I'm hoping to get a better sense of rust that is easy to deal with (needing sanding, or some other basic procedure) vs rust that is tougher (requiring more heavy lifting like cutting out and replacing metal)
If you could also include where the rust is on the bus and a short blurb on how tough the rust will be (or was) to deal with and what you need to do (or what you did) that would be great!
I'm hoping this can help me develop a keener eye when evaluating potential purchases so I don't get TOO screwed over (of course, some amount of screwing being done by the seller is largely inevitable).
Pictures of shit bondo jobs / rust bubbles are welcome too.
Thanks! |

Those turned into a multi-year project for me (and still is imcomplete):
Still more to do. Front dog legs and rear skirt in 2018. _________________ '78 Bus 2.0FI

And I thought my Westy was too far gone... I can see putting that kind of work in a splitty but at what point is a rig too far gone? Never I suppose for the diehards...

I think the pool of solid Bays will eventually deplete enough for folks to fix almost anything - much like Splits are now. We're not there yet though.
To be honest, if I knew a few years ago what I know now, I would have paid a hair more and had a Southern project bus shipped up here with an overall better body. Every low cost New England bus is either swiss cheese or covered in Bondo. _________________ '78 Bus 2.0FI

I was pretty happy yesterday - had the westy up on the hoist at the shop, and my mechanic (who sees lots of them) says " wow he looks really good under here - so many of them are all rusted out, but yours looks pretty solid!"
Sweeter words were never said!
Though I do need to fix both rear fenders - but I've got the panels already. _________________ 77 Westfalia + 2 dogs = good life. |

Good for you for realizing how important this is. Sooooo many people unknowingly buy "flower pots" not understanding that the most critical part of any project is underneath. Especially with a unibody construction vehicle. There are tooooooo many turds with half assed paint jobs that are gobbed up underneith with under coating. If you go to buy Bus and it's been sprayed with it 9 times out of 10 they are just trying to hide the cancer. Pay VERY close attention to the front beam and the rear beam. Both of these are "walk away" if they have cancer. Both of them will kill you or someone else if they fail. Cancer and surface rust are two different animals. With a 40 year old Classic your gonna have to replace some metal unless you find Aunt Millie's Bus that she only drove to the grocery store. What you want to look for is original paint underneith. Original undercoating which will at this point be non existent. And minor surface rust is good. Meaning you have found an unmolested Bus. Stay away from pretty paint jobs....99% of them are complete garbage bondo buggys from hell. |

Fixable....laughing my fucking ass off! Yeah maybe to a hillbilly! That front beam is fucking toast! To you it is fixable...but to anyone with any common sense that's stage 4 cancer and it's at the most critical points on the front beam.... that beam is fucking toast. Lots of REALLY bad advice on here. I just read this and shook my head. Some people are so fucking stupid that they still believe that you can shine a turd. |

from the most rotted piece of shit thread

as the title states....
share photos of the most rotted pile you have ever seen.
I have been on a mission to clean up around here, so posted my old s/c for sale.
trying to load it on the trailer was a job for a skid steer with forks....
then when I went to turn the wheel, it sounded like a gunshot....the front beam blew apart, split in 2
I have NEVER seen a beam split in 1/2 before...ever. seen crusty nasty ones, but having a 2 piece beam is a first for me
so, what do you have to share? |

hummmm.....I like money
in all of my years with buses that was the worst one I had. the sound of the beam splitting in 2 and the torsion leaves blowing apart was like the bark of a .380
I really wish I got a photo of the mess, but the guy was here to pick it up.
now it's stanced, yo _________________

Now there's a description I can relate to. Nice comparison. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
