Is this thing sticking down in the airstream of the intake tract a MAF sensor? Do they like periodic MAF cleaner treatment?

That's an intake air temperature sensor. From the Pro-training Manual:

" It is a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) resistor, which means its resistance value drops as its temperature increases. The signal it supplies to the control unit is used to modify fuel injection rate depending on intake air temperature. The sensor can be tested by measuring the resistance value of the sensor and comparing the reading to a graph."

Whenever I have mine out - for whatever reason - I clean everything up, and take a look at that sensor. If it's dirty, I'll give it a squirt of Berryman's cleaner.

Thanks. That makes sense based on what I know about how the AFM works. Im chasing a low rpm stumble, like when running hard all day then trundling around a campground in 1st at below around 2000 rpm. Stumble as in momentary loss of throttle response. Rarely and one or two revs to clear it's throat and it's good again. Its the only bad habit the van has. Runs really well otherwise.

Check the idle switch function and adjustment?

Neil.
