Yes I'm currently road tripping in it now. I'm on my way back to BC.
I'm in Sioux Falls South Dakota trying to change Canadian money into American. Seems to be impossible. I've tried 8 banks, 2 pawn shops, a walmart, a coin store, and the airport with no luck. A couple of the banks said they would if I were an existing customer.
Ridiculous that a fair sized city, with 4 walmarts all open 24 hours doesn't have a currency exchange!
I'll probably just head north to Canada and get out of this country. They don't want my money, fine, I won't give it to them.
Sorry just a bit frustrated right now.
Here's a few pics from the road. I'll upload some more when i have better WiFi

Good on ya man! I've heard casino's can be good for cash exchange... not sure though.
Good luck with the rest of your voyage! I saw your old bus advertised locally, good luck on its sale also. You definitely traded up my friend! _________________ Gavin

Got some money exchanged finally at the second Wells Fargo branch I tried. They charged me an extra fee on top of the horrible exchange rate. $200 got me about $140 American. Oh well. I'll still head north soon. My US health insurance runs out tomorrow and I don't feel like renewing it.
I hope I do sell my other bus soon. Then I can travel for longer. Anything would be a step up. It was pretty rusted out when I got it 6 years ago, probably better as a parts bus. I had a lot of good times in it though. I did the journey from Vancouver to Toronto and back twice in it and it never left me stranded!
Here's where I'm stopped for lunch today.

Definitely want to keep it as stock as possible. The wood paneling is crumbling in places but I want to replace it with something similar.
I'm really happy with how original it seems. The seal on the firewall was perfect and probably hadn't been open since Germany.
The engine still has what I'm assuming is a production number on the tin. Engine 429 of the day?
The only "hack" that I've seen so far is the egr is disconnected. |
Just reading back over your story. (Don't think this was addressed) The white stencilled number is the model number of the engine. Usually they would have an M as a prefix. Ive seen M157 which i think is the dual port 1600. _________________ Al Brase

Doesn't look like you got a lot of feedback so I'll do that now:
The switch on the e brake lights the BRAKE light to let you know your e brake is on. (Or make you worry that you have a bigger problem- same light)
Yes, likely OE rotor. It should be marked "5400", i think. Interchanges with some Porsche 911 ones that say 6500, 7300, etc!
WRT the 72-74 ex system: To be a good fit, you need to change the 2 lower sheet metal pieces on each side. 72-74 RH cylinder tin had a hole for carb preheat, so a 1979 part will be perfect. Or weld up the hole of the 72-74 one.
Aternator: WOW a 70 amp. It has a separate fan. I never saw one in real life. My CE had a smaller one, I think.
Nice save, by the way!

The good thing is now you have three Wells Farho accounts plus three insurance policies on your car.
Don't worry about renewing your U.S. Health insurance, it isn't worth anything anyhow. _________________ .ssS! |

Thanks for the info! I'm running the original distributor with the OEM rotor. It even had OEM windshield wipers too! I had to replace those though.
So maybe I can tell people I have a Porsche rotor? Not as impressive as a Porsche motor but I'll take it.

I thought she wanted a little too much info for a currency exchange. At least I might have an account or 3 for next time _________________ 1978 CEII Get-away hightop |

Glad you are enjoying your resurrected bus to the fullest. A while ago I worked on your bus's twin with a similar history. It also was entirely original and had been sitting for 20 or so years. Luckily it was in a barn, and was entirely rust free. Of course the gas had turned awful, but the tank was still salvageable and not too much work was required to return it to the road. It's owner was interesting as she was an exotic dancer and used the bus to travel between her "gigs". When working on the engine we would have to move her box of um, "props" out of the way first... Always interesting when she visited... Unfortunately her bus was destroyed when she slid off the road in bad weather, and she did not get a replacement... _________________ 1974 "Restfalia" Camper 2000 cc EFI 2001-

Interesting
If she gets nostalgic I'd be happy to give her a ride in my bus. Or if she's not into that I could just drive her around in it. _________________ 1978 CEII Get-away hightop |

Well I'm back home in Vancouver. It was a good trip but not long enough. It never is. I hit up 13 states and 2 provinces, put on a little over 14,000km. A few hiccups along the way but nothing unmanageable.
I've had an exhaust leak that I've been chasing, and it seems to be getting a bit worse. Sounds like it's only on 1 cylinder. I though it was at the head so kept checking the torque on the manifold but now I'm thinking there's a leak inside one of the brand new heater boxes. POS dansk! There's a hot spot visible and seems like it's grown a bit.
Looks like I'll be cleaning up one of my OG ones and installing that soon.
