I have been gluing it in with JB Weld which should be a great application for JB Weld but one way or another it does not last. Because the thread also was stripped, requiring force to remove nut, this time I replaced the stud with a rocker arm adjuster, the same except for the screwdriver slot. That is okay for now but I would like to install something that will last.
What I have in mind is a stepped stud but not sure if this will work for this. I am concerned about the permissible depth of the stud, And the enlarged end must not protrude where the clamp goes. If course, I could always drill out the clamp. But i want to do it right. Do they make a stepped stud for this position? Anything to watch out for? Thanks in advance.
Bus is a 1971 upright motor.

timesert. do it once and be done with it.
step stud could/would also work. just be careful when tapping the case so minimal or no shavings fall into it.
helicoils suck

I was assuming the hole does not go into the case. See, those are my concerns. Maybe my best bet is to do a JB Weld job to end all JB Weld jobs. Get it scrupulously clean, drilled out to the correct depth. The trouble is, there is no space under the glue (unless you were really lucky) so any tightening the the stud will damage the "threads." Maybe I should tack on tiny rubber sponge on the tip. To tap it I would at least have to remove the carb linkage and maybe even the whole manifold, or else get a right angle drill
I keep hearing about Time Serts but all the stores carry is ersatz brand.
Oh well, no emergency there. Today I got my drivers door button working better. Still not a marvel ease. But it was so bad I needed a lever to get it to work. Next thing it would be broken.

If your valve adjuster screw is holding well then remove it, clean the screw and hole well with brake cleaner and use high strength Loctite on the threads when you put it back in.

There is actually a Loctite product just for what you are wanting to do:

I'd install a stepped stud and be happy

Force compressed air into the oil filler, grease on the tap and install a step stud or insert.

Everyone seems to be assuming the hole goes into the crankcase. My belief is that it is a blind hole. Does anyone know of a stepped stud suitable for this purpose?

use a timecert or helicoil. If you screw up the stepped stud it is over without some customizing like putting in a way oversized aluminium bolt and drilling it, or welding the case before lineboring it.
