I'm working on my friends fuel injected bus 1976 and 2.0l it died one day on him...I sprayed carb cleaner into the intake and it started so I know it has spark. I replaced the fuel pump and relay and turned the key but no whirring from the pump. I told him go carb like my bus and my 78 bus but he wants to keep it does anyone have any ideas? |

The AFM flap must be opened to get the fuel pump to start.
He's a smart owner, since he wants to keep the FI system. _________________ -Kent-

I did not know that I'll give it a shot. I thought just key on and it pumps til pressure is reached then cuts off unless it's running of course |

If the pump isn't running while cranking I'd check for 12V at 86a on the double relay while cranking. Also make sure all the terminals are properly seated in the two double relay terminal blocks, and that the relay ground is properly grounded to the firewall.

Have him (not you) start cleaning the power cables at the battery and the starter first.
He may need to troubleshoot the double relay. You can show him how to do that using the volt ohm meter he needs to buy. Let him do it as he will never learn how any younger.

Keep in mind that the fuel pump electrical connections have a + and a ground and have to be installed that way. |

Also if all else fails.... Check his grounds. Their should be some grounds by your spark plug wires... Happened to us a few weeks ago while driving for some time. She would start and go some and then just turn off. We have a 75 with FI. Checked the grounds and cleaned up the ends and have not had an issue at all since then! _________________ BUSLUST IS NOW IN HIGH SPRINGS FLORIDA!

Ok so after I patched the battery tray and put fuel in the bus it won't start now and I disconnected a fuel rail line and cranked it while the pedal was depressed and it's not sending fuel to the engine...fuel pump is brand new any ideas? |

Pressing the pedal is not the same as moving the afm door. You need to reach in there with a long screwdriver and push the door open with the key on. The pump should then run. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

When I was originally setting up my FI, it helped to put a fuel pressure gauge on the rail test port. This way it’s easy to monitor,,,and when you’re all tweaked, remove it. _________________ Subaru |

If the pump is very noisy, and the previous pump failed, have you checked the fuel filter? I would change it if it hasn't been touched for a while.
Without any background on the bus I wouldn't overlook the possibility of the fuel tank being full of so much rust and debris that it blocks flow through the pump. _________________ |

I was thinking filter maybe that white box under the bus lol but if I hook the pump up directly to a battery should it whirr and buzz or does it not make a sound? |

There's a spring tension adjustment for the flap under the plastic AFM cap. You'll need to move it a click at a time till it runs the pump as it flaps when cranking. Count how many clicks so you can "get back home again" if necessary.
Then you'll need to reset your CO value but you really need an exhaust sniffer for that.
This was never an authorized repair- the authorized repair was replace your airflow meter, but all us techs were cheap! _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

He's just talking about using a pencil or wooden dowel (either is preferred over a screw driver) to open the door in the AFM, not adjusting it. |
