Mercedes diesel in VW Thing

Hi all,

I'm new to the VW Thing. Just learning.

I have a 1981 Mercedes 300SD with 5 cylinder diesel motor and transmission. I was wondering if it might be possible to put this in a VW Thing, and run it on waste vegetable oil.

Can someone provide me their experience or opinion regarding adding a different motor and transmission to a VW Thing? Is it possible? What should I look out for if possible? Suggestions and recommendations?

That's a very large water cooled engine. I doubt you'd have the physical space to mount it behind the transaxle. Most successful engine swaps into a Thing have been from VW type 4, Porsche air cooled, or Subaru boxer engines.

I once saw a Squareback with a V8. The motor occupied the space where the back seat would have been. It was driven by Paul Newman.
