I'm sorry for your loss, hope you get it back somewhat un-molested.
We'll be on the lookout here on the Central Coast. One of my best friends is a State Trooper out of the Florence office. Has his own Westy and obviously has a special place in his heart for them. I sent him this link just now. It may help down the road...literally!
Peace!! (Not for the thief) |

With no offense to our PNW friends, I sure wonder if there's a small ring up there.
Are any of them getting recovered? Are the thefts to part them out, or???
Not to OT, but it seems time to put heads together if these aren't getting solved... and Abel has provided a wonderful first step. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

From what I know every one of the stolen vans has been found in a relatively short period of time, but trashed internally.

I have never been clear on just how these (possibly not overly savvy) individuals manage to steal so many vans.
Do they break in then force the ignition switch? Hot wire the ignition? How do they overcome the steering lock?
Obviously lots of threads on things that can be done to make them harder to steal but I wonder how they overcome the basic security - esp the steering lock. |

Last year it seemed I read most of the thefts up in Seattle were because
1.) they are easy and
2.) there is a lot of room in the Vanagon/Westy for the crackheads to pile up their stolen treasures to move them. Basically an easy way to transport your loot to the buyer.
Sorry it happened to you and I hope you get it back soon. _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

anyone who gets their van recover should ask the cops to have a dog team check it out
you do NOT want any chemicals left in there for a dog to alert on at the border, or during a traffic stop... _________________ .... |

They're SO easy to "hotwire." After my third time with a borked ignition switch, I am a pro at getting one going in short order. I'll bet I could get in w/o a key and have it started in 2 min now if I have a screwdriver. If I was just going to trash the column, it wouldn't even take a minute.
That said, I am not sure how they'd defeat the column lock.
And agreed: scum of the earth. _________________ I'm Joe

Very sorry to hear of yet another stolen van. More the reason as to why I have a GPS tracker as well as a kill switch in mine. Getting tired of shooing away strangers coming up to me asking if it's for sale.
I hope the stolen Vanagon comes back home soon, so that the cute puppy has a place to nap at. _________________ '90 Westy / automatic.
