Hello all. I'm working on a 73 Westfalia and am wondering about the availability of the seals used on the exterior electrical hook-up. The Bus I'm currently working on did not have the seals and I'm unsure what it's supposed to look like. Any pictures/information would be appreciated.

This is the steel, hooded style outlet on the drivers side of the Bus.

Bus Depot and GoWesty are your friends...or at least they are mine. Just check your delivery VERY closely if it comes from Bus Depot...or they will screw you over.

I got the one from gowesty for my 68. Not a perfect fit but it works. The Bus Depot one says its good for all Bay years, so not sure the difference

The one in question is different. I don't think the seals would work.

I'll take some pictures to post in order to clarify.

Thanks for your help!

That gowesty seal was too small for the outlet on my 79. Ended up making my own from gasket material.

I installed the outlet with a foam seal around the perimeter, but if you look closely, there is a gap around the the part which penetrates the side of the Bus. Is there a replacement seal available for this style of outlet?

I had the same issue when I reinstalled the outlet in the side of my 72. Thought I might have cut too large of an opening in the new gerson panel but it wan't me turns out it was this way all along which might help to explain the rusty floor.

I used a butyl tape for window seals. Something like this:

Thanks for the reply. IMO, it's a terrible design, but I was hoping there was a seal made with a lip for the inner portion. I bought some SIKAflex caulk to seal it up, but I prefer something that works.

Just buy a sheet of closed cell foam and make you own. You might try an RV supply and see if they have something.

Just took another look at your pictures and not sure you want to use stove bolts to hold the outlet on. If you ever need to remove it you will need to remove the interior wall to hold the nut on the other side. I believe they came with sheet metal screws.

Thanks for the replies. I'll assume correct seals aren't available.

You're correct. They were originally sheet metal screws. I'm doubtful it will get used let alone need to be removed, but thanks for the heads up.

Craft foam sheets from the $ store or craft store work well for gaskets like that, you can even get it in wild colors if you wish Wink

Ditto on the suggestion from Toolbox & busdaddy.

Yeah, upon looking at your picture a second time...I still have a gap in the same location you're concerned with.

It's a wonky area to seal. I can certainly see how a generic foam seal would shrink and allow moisture in. Perhaps the original had a lip around the flat, outer surround?

Does anyone have a picture of the original seal? This Bus came to me in parts.

I made the outlet-to-body and outlet-to-frame seals from an old truck inner tube. Got the inner tube from a tire shop for free. Sharp scissors and a paper punch thing were my friends.

Don't forget adhesive weatherstrip material from places like Ace Hardware, available in rolls of various thicknesses.

I understand the availability of generic seals. That is what's installed in the picture. I used 1/2" thick closed cell foam and compressed it behind the plate. The perimeter is sealed. The problem, as it turns out others have as well, is the slight gap where the hood protrudes.

Does anyone have a pic of what was there originally?

Thanks!
