Hello
does anybody have details about a fuel tank in a 78 westfalia.
it is fuel injected. is there a pickup tube or any type of screen to clean.

my problem is it will only burn about 4 gallons of fuel then it starts to act up like its running out of gas.
we stop at a gas station fill up and it runs perfect for about 4 gallons or 60 miles.

What year of bus is this and what does it have for carbs or fuel injection?

Is it leaking fuel and from where?

After 4 gallons you still have alot of gas in the tank. Shouldnt be anywhere near something floating around in the tank blocking the outlet and the screen. Plugged vent lines? When you remove the gas cap is there a vacuum?

I would guess that the outlet to your tank is partially restricted and once there is not enough weight of fuel above the outlet you will get too little flow for the needs of the engine.

If you have the hole cut in your rear deck to accessing the fuel sender, you can remove you sender and take a gander into the tank to see if there is anything amiss.

I trust you have reached up behind the battery and felt the hose that is rotted away and replaced it with some fresh 7mm FI fuel line. I think it is about 2" long.

A little squirt of WD40 in the hose will allow it to slip on easily. No clamp needed. The red one here.....

Have you crawled under the tank to see what outlet is on there? you internal tank screen could be a problem, or the feed gas on a turn baffle may be plugged up on the return slots..

Have you an access hole so you can view the top of the tank? a plugged up tank vent may cause a stoppage . can you run with the cap loose?

Some additional questions....

I assume you changed out that vapor hose in red that I posted.

Here is the set up for how fuel gets delivered to the engine....

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

When the engine is running (e-brake on please) wiggle under there and feel the fuel pump. It should be cool to the touch and not making hardly any noise. Noise or warm indicates that the white square plastic filter in front of the fuel pump is loaded up with rust from the fuel tank and needs to be replaced.

On the fuel diagram, there is a little T between cylinders 3/4 on the fuel rail that has a little test port. There is a tiny little bolt and a copper washer that seals it up. You need to remove the bolt and washer and hook up about 4' of 5/16" fuel line with a good clamp to allow you to fill a 2 L Coke bottle outside of the bus. This thing should pump 1L of fuel in 30 seconds.

Remove the center wire on the distributor to make sure the engine won't start. Key "on" and have your lovely assistant pretend to start it for the 30 seconds.

Report back your findings.

No working fuel pump -once the gas drops too low it stops running out by itself ?

There is no screen on the outlet.

Has anybody done business with people at German Supply.
Ive had parts on order for a month and nothing.
The worst customer service of any VW parts supplier.
I kept getting a response saying that they were shipping tomorrow and nothing.
Do not do business with these people.
