Does anyone have any information on a supposedly really nice 23 window Barndoor Deluxe that is heading over to England? I was in the UK for the Volksworld show last week and some trippy dude out there bought the BD, or what he kept telling me.............."snatched it up right under from you Yanks!". Now this guy claims that it is really original and 100% complete 53 deluxe coming from the Southern California area? He mentioned that it came from a baseball player?? The only base ball player that I know of is my bud Brett Barbarie, but he got rid of his a long time ago??? The Bloke also mentioned Danny Zepeda. But the best part he kept mentioning was that he paid around $10,000!!!!!!!! We all know that deluxes are BIG MONEY...........especially a BD Deluxe.

I am just curious what bus he is talking about????? You guys know the BD world is small and any BD that has surfaced, for the most part people know who own them...........................

maybe he meant 10,000 pounds. which is about $19,000. or maybe he meant 19,000 pounds which is about $38,000. or maybe he meant $10,000 plus $38,000 which is about $48,000.

the samba sleuths will shortly undo this one.

I have seen this bus. Original paint on top half, re-painted on the bottom. All original (inc paint) deluxe dash in oh so nice condition, both bumpers with dlx trim, I think it had the seats out back too. Some rust but not bad. It seemed like a good bus for the 2 minutes i looked at it. Hell if he paid 10k for it i would have happily taken it off his hands for that.

I had a picture but i can't find it. Rolling Eyes

Later boyo.

10K in American dollars or English pounds? You saw the bus down here while you were in Cali? This Retro guy said he bought it from a base ball player and mentioned another guy I know. And these guys know BD's and they are not CHEAP when it comes to selling stuff!

Even 10,000 pounds is cheap for that kind of bus in that condition. There is a guy out here selling one for $15,000 and it needs alot of work. And I have a buddy who traded a $15,000 show car, and it needs some work too. And this guy found one for 10K, all nice and original????

That must have been Brett's. It was at Danny's shop. It was around $20K so he probably meant 10,000 pounds.

It was pretty complete last I saw it. The bottom was repainted and "lumpy". I personally think it had a few surprises under that paint but for the UK, it's probably nothing to fix.

40hp engine that was missing the exhaust but I heard it came with a freshly rebuilt '54 20- engine and spltcase tranny. Don't know if he bought those too.

I heard Brett sold it, then bought it back a little while later for less money. Nice work! This was a few years ago.

Was $20k a good price? I had a chance to buy it but felt it was rustier than it looked. Oh well.

Then it's the same bus? Because this guy mentioned Danny's name. And it sounds cheap for a deluxe. But whatever. I have seen that bus before, a LONG TIME ago.

its pictured in the new volksworld. some columnist named steve walker mentions it with a caption that says..."My latest vw find is on the way to the uk,having been sneaked out of so cal. I bet the barndoor mafia wont be too pleasd to have missed out on it."

to use a british term. the bloke appears to be a real wanker. he has some other wise ass stuff to say in his article about some big mouth american ghia guy. you know volksworld is my fave mag ,but i d say my only problem i have with it is this inferiority/superiority thing some of their writers have to say about the u.s vw scene. always comparing, who cares do your own thing with out some pissing match. really who cares?
something tells me the whole gist of his article is along the same lines. if you get a chance to pick up mays issue youll see what i mean.

Well if you guys think you feel bad then you should be in my shoes! I bought that bus from Jeff Keller in Texas about 5 years ago for 14K. It was complete and a driver. I sold it to Brett when I bought Ritchie Kings 54 Dlx RHD bus for the same price as I had told Jeff I would not spec it out. Bret and I had a gentlemans agreement that I had first right of refusal. I had tried rebuying it back from Brett several times since we had originally done the deal but he told me he would never sell! What a fucktard!!! Now I know what frienship really means, thanks alot BRETT!!! I guess if he let it go that cheap than he reall is a dumb FUCK. It had the correct 6 leg middle seat and all the seats were in very good original upholstery. It had all the correct logod glass and was coimplete in every way except the rear luggage strips were missing. It had all the trim rings and all the vent trim tail lights and reflectors.Restored pods and steeringwheel and hornbutton and correct floor mats front and rear. COMPLETE for under 20K US???? Need I say more?Well Is Brett or Danny the dumb one for letting it go so cheap they should have been able to part it for more than that!

Hey Spooky....I would find out for sure if it was Bret's, you know there isn't anyone more honest than him. If it was Bret's, I bet Danny let the ball drop more than Bret.....you know what I mean........

Something sounds real fishy. I have never known DZ to let anything go cheap or even fairly priced. Maybe the real market outside of the BDM is a lot less then they all think. Hell I sold the 54 BD deluxe for about a third of what said bus sold for.
I can't wait to see what the next one I get will sell for, they are out there, more then we all think

Mr Hangover probably had his knee pads and lobster bib on to get the deal from Brett in the first place but after thinking about it they've both been in bed for a long time!

The British mags hold nothing back, I remember a picture from I think KP and it showed a Mexican guy sitting next to his lowered beetle having a beer and the caption read "Lardy beaners love cerveza and lowriders".
