Maybe Steve being from a different country didn't completely understand how offensive that comment was?

The comment in the latest issue about the '54 didn't bother me.
I'm fairly certain thats Kellers old bus....with those big fat wide whites....

that could have a lot to do with it.
for example; dunno if you guys realise that those stickers/shirts from blitzkrieg racing (or anything in that style) are seriously offensive for a lot of (older) people out here in europe ??

On behalf of all the staff at VolksWorld - I'd just like to confirm we aren't anti-anyone - especially VW owners and certainly not American VW owners!
We have always respected the quality of cars which have been built in America and have always loved featuring cars from DKP, GFK, PRA, and many others.
I'm not about to say we do not have some amazing VWs here in the UK, but if anything it is due to the American VW scene, especially Drag Racing and California Look, that the UK has a VW scene in the first place.
If I think back 20 years or so, we had a very boring VW scene.
So respect where it is due! You guys, and girls, have some breathtaking VWs!

If the mention of a Karmann Ghia enthusiast included the fact he was/is American - it does not mean his place of origin was the basis for the story or that he was a boring person due to being American.
The person in question just happened to be from this country, as easily as he could have been from any other country in the world. So please read nothing into it - as there is nothing to read into it.

I have numerous friends in the U.S.A and have never witnessed anything other than goodwill between US and UK VW enthusiasts. The same story applies to any VW enthusiast from any other country I have come into contact with!
We are all into the same hobby, and share the same passion. I don't go out looking to find fault in the people or the cars - as I've got better things to do with my time, as I am sure you have.

Differences in humour, languages and locations should not be an issue - although it seems this is sometimes the case. The fact is we all really love VWs - and that's the most important thing in our life - well mine, certainly.

If something published in the magazine - even something from 7 years ago - has ever upset anyone, then ultimately it is obviously down to me to apologise for this. No specialist magazine would go out of its way to upset readers - that would be suicidal. If we have ever missed the meaning of something, then trust me it would not have been out of any kind of malicious intent, and certainly not racist!
Racism does nothing but harm, so why people have a place for it in this world is beyond me!?!

We do sometimes sail a bit close to the wind though, we ran a massive front cover heading which simply said BROWN LOVE - it could be seen as us talking about something homosexual - as a few people pointed out, but it was simply point out that the car on the cover was a lovely brown Bug.

As for the Barndoor reference, I think you could be reading into it a little too seriously; we all know there are more serious BD heads in the USA than anywhere else. The caption in question does not suggest a BDM guy 'owned' this Bus, more, as with any BD fan, that a BDM guy (being seriously into Barndoors) would like to own it. As in; - Steve Walker has just found a '53 Deluxe - I bet Ivan is sad he missed it! Of course I'd liked to have found it and bought it, but I didn't! I won't lose any sleep over it though. Smile
So, please do not think this was an attack on America, the BDM or anything else - as I can assure you this is not the case.

Anyway - America wins with ease on the BD front - plenty more have made the journey to the US than over in this direction. Not that anyone is keeping count!

So basically as a very famous man in history once said 'Love thy neighbour as yourself'.

Oh, also, Trayle - the new ride truly ROCKS!

no, "stop the insanity" was the catch phrase of some shaved head female fitness/diet person named Susan Powter.

and since this was debated a little before, i'll chime in with my first hand experience.
tom brouilette bought his 53(?) deluxe back from bret. i was there when the transaction took place, and was with ML when we followed tom back to albuquerque in it. (see a cover of a back issue of neato with a picture of the deluxe next to the giant dinosaurs.) the bus was in albuquerque for a while, parked in tom's driveway, and then i heard that someone in germany bought it in some kind of business trade/loan/whatever. however i do not know where it went after it left albuquerque. maybe someone could ask tom.

Mr. Bermfingers,

I started this thread because I was curious to know which BD was heading out to England? That is all...........but when I caught whiff of the derogatorive statement made in your publication, this really pissed me off - and I am not talking about being drunk! What was more upsetting was being informed that the writer of this comment was confronted and pointed the finger to the opposite direction. Hey! If he had the balls to make that bold statement............have the balls to be confronted! Racism does hurt people and turns into other forms as well. But I have no beef any longer, responsibility was taken.

I also have no complaints or acrimony towards the English. I was in England a week ago and had the pleasure of meeting all of you fantastic people and made lots of new friends and caught up with old friends.

Cheers for now.

Didn't NB drive it back east for Tom? And I do remember it being in TN for a while but I do not think at the Dr. Jone's house.

I had the pleasure of meeting Keith Usher at the Bakersfield show a few weeks back. He took part in our "Peace thru Tamales" program and he seemed pleased.
I guess in England there are no tamales or Mexican food to speak of, so he has been enjoying that food since he landed, and had his first tamale at that show.
I don't really have a point to make but then again, what is this thread about?!

The thread was started on curiousity. But the curiousity is gone, but a derogatorive comment was made in Volksworld a while back, surfaced and changed it a bit. But it's over!

And yes, there are no Mexicans or Mexican restaurants in England. Well I didn't see any?? I could be wrong. I do know that most of my English mates come to LA for the Mexican food.

there certainly are mexican restaurants in England (we have a few Chillis, no I know they don't count, we also have proper ones too) and whilst I can't think of any mexicans I have met off the top of my head I'm sure there must be some around. I met a girl from Chile once and a lovely Brazillian too... anyway I digress, weren't we talking about cow sheds or something?

I hope this doesn't go over the wrong way as I am an American of European descent. But how does the Mexican food sit on those European stomachs? I know that sometimes I can't handle it with my weak stomach, but I still love to eat it!!

We had the same question running through our minds when we gave Keith the Tamale!

can't speak for the rest of the continent but personally I love spicy food and not just Mexican, also like Indian and hot Chinese (szechuan or however it's spelt) food. Habanero chillis have to be the hottest I've ever tried, from the west indies

We have some pretty spicy stuff here in the uk, we have as many indian restaurants as you in the us have mexican ones. When in the uk go for an indian curry and see how you like a vindaloo for spicy!!! This said the spiciest (spelling?) thing i remember eating was in a backstreet restaurant on top of that big hill with the flag on it in Tijuana. Was with some guys looking at some vw stuff there and the restaurant seemed like locals only, there was this one bown of green stuff that i noticed no one eating so i had a go, damn spicy but hey i was there so at least i tried it. Thank god for sol thats what i say> Shocked

Oh forgot this thread is about barndoors right! well i looked at my ambulance today so at least i have mentioned one.

Habanero Chillis originate from Mexico........in the Yucatan Peninsula. They are also popular in Central America as well. I have not eaten a chilli hotter then an Habanero?
