Photo of the carrier bar mounted to van. Notice the circlular opening for the hydraulic engine mounts. FAS taylored these mounts to work specifically with their gen v engine conversion program and they really do their job of tempering any sort of engine vibration. Apparently, they used to have a video on the FAS site that showed a perfectly still, pint of beer sitting on top of a running engine.
These photos are not of my particular mounts but this is what they will look like.

Since the van was already in the shop I decided it was a good time to switch out the original upper control arms to new, powder coated control arms from Burley Motorsports. I was experiencing excessive outer edge tire wear because of the 1.5 lift springs. The Burley arms are supposed to correct the geometry and allow for proper camber adjustment, back to factory spec. (I can't remember which Samba member helped to educate me about the problem and the solution but a big thank you to whomever for doing so and a thank you to Burley for engineering and producing the control arms.)

This winter I took the opportunity to add some "Vanagon LEDs" footwell lights. About a year ago, I bought two, "Wet Okole" seat covers for the front seats. I have always used them on my trucks. They are a nice thing, especially when you go to trade in or sell your truck. The seats look brand new when you take them off. Definitely worth the $250. Eventually (after I recover from the engine conversion) I am planning on buying two, Recaro leather seats for the two seats up front. It's easy to get pulled into the, I need this and I need that mentality with Vanagons and to emulate everything Gowesty does on their vans but I will say that I have driven a fair distance in a recaro seat and even before knowing anything about them, I couldn't stop commenting on how comfortable those seats were. Definitely a little hard at first but they fit and support the body perfectly. I also upgraded the exterior signal lights to leds along with a few of the interior lights and dash lights in an attempt to lower the draw on the auxiliary battery. I installed the auxiliary battery to run the stereo, the amplifier, subwoofer, interior lights and 12 volt outlets. Yes a lot of draw. This has led to the installation of a solar system. I installed a 100 watt flexible panel and a 10 amp controller. This system seems to be handling the demand and I am very happy with it.
Gowesty charge controller installed above the iPad bracket on the front of rear closet. SAE solar connector mounted to the right of the charge controller. I rigged up an MC4 to SAE adaptor cord so I can use both the gowesty 80 watt panel when parked in the shade or utilize the flexible panel permanently mounted to the luggage cage. Right now the panel is mounted to the top of the bottom of the cage but I am probably going to mount it to the underside of the cage. There will be a little voltage drop because of some shading from the steel bars but I believe the system will still provide plenty of power. For the panel on the roof I routed the solar cables through the same hole that the rear wiper motor wires and wiper fluid line penetrates the body and routed it across the shelf behind ac condenser and around the rear cabinet to the controller. A little circuitous but it works. I also mounted two, 12 volt outlets in the front of the rear cabinet.

It hasn't been all, mods, improvements and conversion. We have definitely got our money's worth out of the van.
At the beach enjoying a beautiful day with my wife and two kids. Willie at the wheel - another good reason for installing a kill switch.
Our very first camp out. Willie woke up at 3 in the morning and exclaimed from the lower bunk, "where's are house?"
We even found an arrowhead when we took a little hike near camp.

Latest round of photos form FAS. Various components installed in clean engine bay. Looks like FAS spent the time to clean all the grime and road salt out of the engine bay, another small step greatly appreciated.
SS coolant pipes.
FAS fabrication is top notch. The quality of their work is easy to see. Intercooler and coolant and power steering fluid bracket.
New fuel spigot firewall fitting

Looks amazing, congrats!! |
Thanks! I'll post more detail shots as I receive them from FAS. It was a bit of a wait to get in there but from what I've seen of their workmanship and fabrication, it will be well worth the wait. |

I'm guessing the OP has achieved VIP status @ FAS, 'cause this build ain't funded with chump change _________________ Casey--

Shift components installed. I'm going to miss the convenience of the automatic but have almost always owned vehicles with manual transmissions. Looking forward to more power, higher torque especially at the lower end and can't wait to climb my first highway hill doing 70 mph.

Yes, this is definitely costing an arm and a leg though FAS' pricing is very reasonable for the quality and service that they provide. Their attention to detail is second to none. I wish I had the skills to do the work myself. I don't have oodles of cash laying around. Im a humble carpenter/general contractor that has been saving for years for this project. My number one goal is to provide a safe and capable vehicle to tour this country with my family. I can't wait for them to see this country and to learn about nature, history, wildlife etc firsthand. Im almost looking at it as a piece of my kids education (oh yah and I really wanted to build my dream Vanagon.) I'm still contemplating a syncro conversion down the road but not sure it will be necessary. I'm hoping the atb differential will provide the traction im looking for. My main interest in having a syncro would be for snowy conditions. I'm not sure the atb will provide enough stability in such conditions. I'll definitely write about the subject after I've had a chance to test it out.
Ps. Thanks for your interest. |

Looks like you were at Menemsha? I spent ever summer in aquinnah when I was growing up so I spent a fair amount of time there. Now I am in northern MA, would love to get my van back out on the island sometime! |

No way! That is awesome. I was not aware of such a product. I am definitely going to buy that muffler. Thank you very much for the tip. Greatly appreciated. Thanks for the interest in the build. I'll keep the photos and eventually some video coming.
I actually saw your thread on the syncro sticker and commented twice. I am still laughing about it. I think it's great. I am tempted to get one if you do another run. The 2wd sticker and the syncro gas cap could really confuse someone.
Thanks,
Nick
