the clutch on my 1979 bus was chattering worse & worse. I have a new pressure plate, disc, T/O bearing, boden tube, and cable. I was about ready to pull the engine & dig deeper into the issue when i noticed this.
The metal tube that the boden tube attaches to had a big crack in the support tab! Just thought i'd share to help anyone having this same problem
Link
The tab welded up & i have no more chattering |

My saying this will probably make some of the purist pull their hair out and then sacrifice themselves in a fire fueled by burning old Type 1 engines, but for the entire length of them I have owned and driven VW Transporters, I have just had some nylon starter cord very tightly wrapped around the torsion tube and clutch cable tube binding the two together. This is a temporary fix that I did way back in 1988 and has yet to give problems. The original weld lasted a far shorter time.

The tube can cause chatter. Usually it needs shims to be an S pattern. If the mount is broken it can cause this problem. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

I keep one of those giant hose clamps with me in case I get a little rambunctious off road again. Do you think the slight flexibility of your mount gives you a better or worse pedal feel?

It is cinched tight enough that I don't think it ever moves in normal use. My pedal feels 100% normal. |
