Been a while since the last post, but things have slowly been moving forward. A couple of weeks ago I went to a friend and we cut the decals for the bus.
Next up was of coursing getting them onto the bus straight, in the correct position and without air bubbles. I managed to get quite a few bubbles on the first one so spent quite some time trying to lure them out. Next ones went better and all-in-all it turned out OK.
Took some pictures in the garage back then, but they weren't very inspiring, so I never got around to doing this post. So when there was a swap meet today I figured I'll drive the bus there. Picked up a friend on the way and had a nice drive through town. I brought my camera, so took some pictures on the way back. Really nice to drive the bus again. I also mounted the steering damper before heading out, and I think it's a bit smoother now. Was told by other to try without it first, but I think I'll keep it on.
Thinking of lowering it another step. It got around 2 inches of travel now. What do you guys think? _________________ 68 panel

Remember this?
Spent some more time getting it nice. Almost there!
Also just got word that the crankshaft assembly is ready from balancing, so we're getting close to starting the build. _________________ 68 panel

Looks like you had the spigots enlarged. Going for a big build?
EDIT: whoops... I did not see the engine plan on previous pages... I just spent parts of my work hours today reading your thread! Hyggelig!
Nice panel! Love those wheels... but I’m not a big fan of lowering, so I think any lower than where it is would not be good. Just my opinion...

Haha, cheers Sambo!
@wasted youth: 1776, yes. Appreciate you caught up - I've gone through "a couple of" threads on here during work hours too
Lots of salt during winter, so it's not seeing any more of that as long as I own it. _________________ 68 panel

I'm guessing most cars are heading to the yard after 10 to 15 years on the road. _________________ 68 panel

Same around here. Although I have high hopes for the newer vehicles (2010+). Maybe they will get 15-20. But the jury is still out on that one. _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

Got the crank back from the balancing guy, which make all 3rd party tasks completed and all parts received. So we are ready to build. Started last night with bearings. Next up is the rods before we can drop it in the block. Excited about this – learning lots!

The new 1776 project is rolling. Most parts are now ordered. Roughly the build will be something like this:
- 90.5mm x 69-74mm Hypereutectic Machine-In Piston & Cylinder Set, AA Brand
- Panchito 044™ (40 x 35.5) 90.5/92 Bore
- Rebuilt OEM Connecting Rods, 13/15/1600cc Type 1 Based Engines, Race
- Web Cam Type 1 Camshaft, Grind 118, 1.1 or 1.25 Rockers Prepped
- Gene Berg DNCF 42
- Ron Lummus Racing Black Magic Clutch Disc
- KENNEDY 200MM CLUTCH PLATE STAGE-I
|
Panel looks great, nice work! Engine build looks good and you’re are gonna love the KEP stage one clutch, best upgrade I ever made. What compression are you shooting for to make the 100HP you’re looking for? _________________ __________

Those numbers seem about right. We use salt here in Maine, too. My last truck made it from 2001 to 2017 (4 fenders, one bed, rockers twice, three doors all on the driver's side) before the frame started to get soft. My 2007 has had rockers once, that's it. My 2010 just needs the rear hatch, underneath still is painted and looks good. _________________ 1979 Transporter (sold)

Wow! I had to argue with my builder for 8.5:1, I am having a 2275 built though. Can’t wait to see how you like it.
I’ve dynoed my last 2 engines, First was a 2109 then a 2175. 2109 was 65 hp with 90 FPT and the 2175 was 75hp with 110 FPT at the wheels. Please post your dyno results, many of us would love to see them. _________________ __________

Finally got a night in the garage, and we didn't stop until 3 AM when the short block was complete. Anders is gone on holiday for a couple of weeks now, but the goal is to have it running in the bus for the SCC meet in the middle of August.

Got some good progress on the new engine after two nights in the garage.
Just need to cut the push rods and the long block is pretty much done.

Finally got around to start on the interior, so here’s a photo dump of two days of work in the summer heat. Feels good to see the shell disappear.

Thanks Kent! It's nice to keep a log of all the work, and also give something back to the forum where I've learnt a lot.
I guess my main take-away from this project is to have healthy combination of research, own experience and common sense. Then at the end not worry to much and just dive in – the best way to learn.
Cheers!
