Why don't you do it first. Make sure to post the video. Oh, and let me know where and when - I want to be far away.

Quick update:

I'm still dealing with this issue. I've checked all spark plugs and fixed a small oil leak coming from the distributor (new o-ring). The timing was off so I fixed that. However I still have this issue of loss of power and chugging or hesitation at lower RPMs :-/

Unsure if it's related but I have one other issue with this doka and that is with idle. When I start the doka it needs to warm up before it'll hold idle otherwise it stalls. I believe it might be a burnt out ICU. When I turn on the ignition prior to start the fuel pump engages but the IAC doesn't vibrate. I've replaced the IAC a year or 2 back and feel like it should function, so my thoughts are that it's possibly a burnt ICU. That said I took the ICU out and it looks fine on the exterior. I haven't opened it up yet to see if any of the resistors are burnt out. Anyway I'll check on that but wasn't of the opinion that that'd cause my issue.

On another note I was thinking that this might be an issue with the AFM. I had done the capacitor fix a while back so I took it out and checked it. Capacitor fix still looked well soldered from pin 2 to 4. Everything looked clean. The tracks looked good, not worn out. I put it in an checked it at idle and 3k RPM. moving the slider CW or CCW and the engine mostly started to sputter if moved out from where it was, which is a good sign. Only at 3k RPM I moved it CCW and the engine rev'ed higher. Moving CW the engine slowed with the leaner mixture. So the AFM seemingly checks out. Maybe an adjustment but unsure about this. Not enough info on AFM adjustment that I could garner to justify messing with it.

So I'm still at a loss of what this could be. The symptoms move around and change a bit with timing and TPS adjustment but slightly.

Anyway that's where I'm at. Any comments welcome!

Cheers!

Took out the idle control unit and found a fried transistor. Ordered a new one and will solder it on next week. Hopefully that'll solve the idle issue and I work towards solving this loss of power and poor running issue!

Update:
Still troubleshooting this issue. I'm updating the title to low power and rough running because I think the vibration is just a symptom of the rough running condition.

Anyway I tried to fix the ICU and soldered a new transistor on and definitely works better than with the ICU out completely I still have idle issues on cold start. When I start I have to warm up the engine before it'll idle correctly. Possibly not related to my rough running issue but keeping track of it in case someone tells me it's related or not!

I've also been troubleshooting the TempII sensor. I've noticed that when I disconnect the tempII sensor that starting the doka becomes impossible or difficult. However if it does manage to start then it runs better without the tempII sensor connected and my issue is gone. Which seems strange. Even if I jump the connector (disconnected but with a jump wire) then my issue still occurs. So I'm not sure where this leads me and that's where I can use the help of this crew!

Any thoughts on what this could be?

Cheers,
Glen

I also replaced the TempII sender just in case the one in there, which was less than a year old was faulty and same issue regardless!

Thought I'd attempt to explain current issue and what's been done to date to resolve this!

Van:
1987 Syncro Doka Eurospec 2.1 Digijet Engine

Issues:
1) Cold start idle: The van starts ok but doesn't idle until warm. I've removed the ICU and found a burnt capacitor and soldered a new one on. It's better with the ICU in than out but doesn't seem to solve this cold start idle problem.

2) Once warm (2min after cold start) the van idles ok (800rpm) but when accelerating the van has a loss of power and runs rough (tends to make the van feel like is surging/stuttering and vibrating but very little power. More power at higher RPMs but definitely anemic).

Things done:
- All CV joints pulled, packed and re-installed
- Timing set to 35deg at 3k RPM
- All spark plugs replaced with new ones gapped correctly

New finding:
- Found that when the TempII sender is unplugged the rough running during acceleration goes away but the van doesn't start or start well.
- When TempII sender is connected the rough running during acceleration is apparent.
- I've also disconnected the TPS and it changes nothing! Seems strange that nothing would occur!

Questions to the group:
- If the TempII sender is removed does that mean that the engine will run rich? And if so does this point to an issue somewhere else?
- Is it worth testing the Ohm readings on the TempII sender pins at the ECU?
- What other tests, checks can be done?

Thanks in advance for you continued support!

Cheers,
Glen

Odd, indeed.

The TPS should open JUST off idle and then close again at full throttle. The van will run like a pig if the TPS is not adjusted properly. Also, there should be 5V. across the pins of the TPS harness connector, with the ignition switch in the "RUN" position, of course.

Hi Folks,
I'm back to troubleshooting this issue. Below is the current state of things. A few questions to the group to try and get to the bottom of this.

- I'm very curious as to why unplugging the TempII sensor makes the issue go away! Does this point to an issue elsewhere?
- I also have an engine heater which is plumbed into the system and has a sensor as well. Plugged or unplugged nothing changes so wondering what this is! Any thoughts?
- Based on the symptoms would anyone ascertain this issue to be the engine running rich? If so and the TempII sensor removed stops it from running rich would that point to another component?

So much of my research online point to a O2 sensor, but the DJ doesn't have one and I'm at a loss as to what component could have a similar effect? Thoughts welcome! Wink

Thanks!

PostPosted: Thu Mar 22, 2018 12:11 pm    Post subject: Re: Syncro vibration help!!! --> Solved Bad Fuel Injectors Reply with quote

hi Folks,
I just wanted to close this one off. I broke down and took my doka into a reputable vanagon specialist here in the area (as I was at a loss) and they found that 2 driver side fuel injectors were bad. So after replacing them it's now running well again. I had bought 4 new injectors from GW a couple of years ago when I redid all of the fuel lines, I thought why not change out the injectors and not have to worry about that in the future. Well big lesson learned there. I didn't even troubleshoot those because they had less than 10k on them. So bitter that they went out so quickly but glad that it's solved and I have yet another lesson learned! Wink

Thanks to everyone for their input/insight.

Cheers!
