hi! im going to change my 002 for a 091. i use clutch flywheel starter and bell housing from my 002, i have mounted the gearbox on the engine already. and it seems ok.

now i have second thoughts, is the input shaft too long since i use the the shorter. 002 bellhousing for my new 091? does it matter? thinking of endplay

The input shaft has to match the engine. A Type 1 engine takes a shorter input shaft than a Type 4 engine. Both the 002 and 091 bellhousing are essentially the same depth, so have no bearing on what length shaft you use.

The shafts in that photo are not labelled correctly.

The 002 tranny came with two different input shaft depending on which engine it was being used with.

The correct information from the source you link to is:

Quote:
091 311 105 A, INPUT SHAFT ,1968-71 TYPE 2 BUS WITH A TYPE I ENGINE, 002 BELL HOUSING, , SHORT SNOUT (287MM OVERALL LENGTH)

091 311 105, INPUT SHAFT, 1972-79 TYPE 2 BUS WITH A TYPE IV ENGINE, 002 OR 091 BELL HOUSING, , LONG SNOUT (298MM OVERALL LENGTH)

As you can see there is almost no difference in the depth of the bellhousings, the difference is mainly in the shape instead.

so any baywindow bus transmission that was mated to a T4 engine will have the longer input shaft?

I'm swapping transmissions and my replacement has had its shaft cut short.

the existing input shaft is f#%ked where the oil slinger and input shaft seal ride... the whole transmission is toast

i have a couple 002 transmissions i can check for use.. will their shafts be long enough, can i measure with the bellhousing installed?

Easy to measure, yes:

002 '71 and earlier had the short shaft. 002 '72 had a long shaft. But you have to measure. I replaced the the shaft in my '72 trans with a shorter one from an earlier bus. I didn't feel good about cutting the shaft. So you can't go by the numbers on the trans.

You are already using your bell housing from your 002. Use the input shaft too. Take the 091 input shaft out and put the 002 input shaft in. be sure to re-use the 091 shaft coupler though. Idea

As people have said above, the necessary input shaft it determined by the engine one runs (Type 1 or Type 4) and not the bellhousing.

And more specifically for those who remember best with a factoid:

Type 1 engine supports the short input shaft with the pilot bearing right there in the gland nut holding on the flywheel.

Type 4 engine supports the long input shaft that has to travel through the flywheel all the way to the pilot bearing waaaaay inside the crankshaft itself.
