My car was idling the other day and the motor came to a sudden stop and quit.I have a situation where if I turn the crank pulley with a wrench to the left it will turn all day. When I turn it clockwise a couple rotations it ends up stopping quick as if the crank is hitting something in the case.If I back and forth it it will move counter then stop on the same spot clockwise. It is a 73 beetle semi auto 1600 DP.I don't think a rod is broken as I cannot hear anything while rotating.I was thinking of checking the oil pump, distributor drive gear and distributor, etc for binding before doing a possible tear down.Could it be something to do with the torque converter and flex plate at the front of the engine. The car always shifted great!

Pull the engine and see if it turns while disconnected from trans. Either way, I think your gonna have to do that.

Yes, engine pull time, with any luck you'll find a foreign object in the bellhousing.

Is it possible that your distributor clamp slipped and allowed the distributor to lift a bit? That would allow the drive gear to lift when you rotate clockwise and jam the gear. Counter cl9ckwise would drive the drive gear down. Or maybe I'm backwards?
