Any clue about that part number 111 119H? Usually they have three sets of numbers. Most muffler numbers have a 251 in the middle. That doesn't come up either. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Yep...kind of what we were yakking about on the side. Overall volume is also important. I think you could modify a 1600 muffler with extra exits and get away with it. The internal volume on that 1200 muffler may be restrictive. Ray |

Don, can you explain this to me? What diamond flanges? Clearance the bar where and why? |
Fuck donuts. That's why.
I had Adrian weld some flanges on after I had two sets of donuts leak in my lifetime. No need for CO poisoning in the cabin.
Now my exhaust is a bolt together system like most cars.
The mustache bar needed SLIGHT clearancing, but it was nothing that a small Dremel stone couldn't handle. (The time it would have taken to get the die grinder out was longer than it took to Dremel.)
When welding the flanges on, bolt everything up dry like in the first photo. Then weld up with NO gaskets. Once you install the metal gaskets on the exhaust ports, your new flanges will be 1/8" apart. Here's the secret to that gap:
https://www.cbperformance.com/Graphite-Compression-Gaskets-s/115.htm
The compression exhaust gaskets take up the tiny gap, and allow everything to seat and seal nicely. (I used a bit of copper RTV on mine the second time I assembled the system, because it was cold at Rich's house and I wanted to make it home for Thanksgiving without waiting for a gasket shipment.)
Bonus points if you clearance the welds on the bolt-side of the joint so they hold the bolt and you don't need to back-wrench upon installation.
10/10, highly recommended.

Little of both. I had actually typed up that it was curious that the seller had all pre-68 parts listed EXCEPT this one muffler I have never seen in my life, but I deleted it trying to hold back the dickness. But I am no detective I suppose. I generally take your advice as being knowledgeable. I'll stay out of your way. This has been a good reminder of why I don't post in this forum anymore. I'll be in the bug forum if anyone needs info on BUG parts.... _________________ 1971 STD BEETLE- DD-1st car, 1st love. keepin' it stock! 1600DP, Solex 34-3 Mexi Bosch SVDA Dist NOW w/POINTS

Flanges on stock mufflers are for people who don't install the donut clamps the correct way!!
I've used the donuts, both asbestos and wire mesh versions. No leaks when orientating the securing clamps correctly.

They have special clamps for buses that clear the bar better. I've never tried them though but I can guess they would be the way to go. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Bill, nothing can help a heat exchanger pipe that's worn besides new metal. And I didn't want to do the "hammer in" pipe repair method, so I went with something that makes it a leak-free no-brainer that will never ever risk CO in the cab. (I got really light-headed ONCE in my life from it. Not something I'll ever do again.)
Those one-piece circle clamps are inherently flawed, I'll try to find the thread on why… Wish I would have known before I put them on my engine last year and got little black spots all over the fresh ceramic coat…
Gary, let me know if you need me to bring a spare head down this weekend. It can be welded up easily with one.

True that in regards to having to have the correct size diameter pipes on the heater boxes. I did buy the tap in replacements for my buses heater boxes. I also welded them in as well. Nice tight fit with the donuts. I am use the bug style 2 piece clamps and when they are installed correctly, you see them push the donut into the junction sealing it up. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]
