In 1968 in the US, auto-stick beetles came with IRS and manual transmission beetles came with swing axles. In 1969 they went to IRS across the board. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle |

So recently I had my front transmission mount fail! I was driving and the car lost almost all power, then the stick shift started moving on it’s own like it was possessed lol. Limped it back home and ended up pulling the engine. I needed new axle boots as well, so I also picked up a new Bowden tube and accelerator cable tube. Got new transmission fluid and did an oil change.
The possession:

The front Mount plate was completely shot:

When I put the engine back in, the shifter wouldn’t move. Turns out my clutch wasn’t adjusted properly with h
The new Bowden tube and I had about 1” of freeplay. Adjusted to 1/2” and the car runs beautifully now.
I also picked up some newish front fenders as My current ones has been rolled and had some dings in them. That is my next project. One came off a 69 and one off a 71 I think.

Found out my filler neck hose was leaking. That braided German hose is expensive! Hope it does the trick though. I’ll pay $45 to get rid of the horrendous gas smell in the cabin after filling up.
Also got the 4 rubber band pieces that go around the metal. _________________ 1968 Beetle Sedan |

I have the John Muir book. Between that and a little help from guys on here. I have fitted some missing tinware, new speedo cable, adjusted valves, installed new window channel so it winds down aswell as up, put new winders on, set timing, oil change, stopped all but 1 tiny oil leak. I dont plan on doing much if any body work just yet. Dont think it really needs it. A mate is a welder and likes working on cars anyway. Have new spark plugs ready to fit. Also got some adjustable spring plates ready to go on as rear driver side is slightly lower. |

Thanks! Glad you like the thread.
I don’t have much mechanical experience but between this forum and all the knowledgeable guys on here, YouTube and a couple books, I’m able to get through most of it.
I highly recommend the Bentley repair manual (it’s either a light blue or orange depending on the year) and John Muirs keeping your bug alive books.
The Bentley takes an official approach, and John Muir take more of an idiots approach which can be very refreshing, especially when you are just a normal person trying to keep your bug on the road.
Thanks again and bug on! _________________ 1968 Beetle Sedan |

Because you posted on this thread today and me being recently new here its the 1st time i have seen this thread. Loved following your progress and your bug looks lovely. Great job, thanks for posting it all step by step.
Mine is a 68 too bought it in January. Am trying to teach myself on all aspects of it but am very much a novice. I am enjoying the learning though and doing what i can. My only previous bug was a 75 and that was 30 years ago. |

Had some issues lately with the car not starting from time to time.
I might fire it up, drive somewhere and then when I go to leave car just clicks like a dead battery.
I pulled the battery and noticed it was from 2013! That means it was already 4 years old when I bought the car.
I replaced the battery with a the proper size group 42 battery from Duralast and it fires up perfectly now without hesitation. I also have rubber caps over the terminals just to protect it from the seat springs.

Fit! Also switching from 10-30w oil to 30w.
Between those two things, hopefully my engine will be happier 😁
