I wouldn't think so as a washer would be just another potential point of failure, but will bow to the knowledge of a person with Mercedes experience.

Those were stock on my '71 bus. No washer and they took an allen head bolt. 6mm allen IIRC.

Here ya go!

https://www.grainger.com/product/FABORY-M6-1-00-x-25mm-26LG41

The proper item but you most likely don't want 100 of them!

I'd put a lock washer under there, for sure. Would one of the fancy ones from the half shafts fit, Dave?

Axle bolts are 8mm aren't they?

Schnoor safety washers are a well known brand....

http://schnorr.com/product-details/safety-washers/

You can get 6mm ribbed lock washers though....

https://www.grainger.com/product/5MXD7&AL!2966...15004759:s

Studies have shown that lock washers are for the most part "feel good" items but really don't work.

For reference try looking at the front axle parts for a '71 bus. Mine used those same axle nuts.

The item shown between the axle nut and the bearing cap I believe to be a grounding spring?

there's no need for a washer on the bolt on the pinch nut.
the spring tension of the pinch nut keeps the bolt under tension just fine for millions of cars of that era.

but if a schnoor washer makes you sleep better at night.. go for it.

That three eared washer looks critical to me. Without it, the clamp nut places no force on the outer bearing race.

Am I wrong on that?

That is a mercedes illustration.

We aren't redesigning the system, simply replacing VW's one use peen in place nut with a reuseable locking nut.

You only want force to be applied to the inner race. I don't understand why the washer has its special shape.

djkeev,

Just got mine too, and as I had not looked at this thread for a week, I had not known that the clamp nuts would be missing the fastener bolt.

Any consensus on the bolt? Seems like a lot of back and forth on what I need to look for... I may just have to take the nuts out to Fastenal.

6mm
1.0 thread pitch
22 or 25 mm long

cap screw head, 5mm hex for allen wrench.

Buy the hardest one they carry 8.8, 12.9 ...... stay away from stainless, it is a weak metal and this is too important of an item to risk fastener failure.

On a Bay (don't have a clue about the Mercedes) the clamping bolts were socket head cap screws.

Yeah, but you need to apply force to both cones of the needle bearing on that Merc design. The actual outer race isn't getting force.

I don't get the shape either. It could just be a thrust washer

Not sure of the year or model breaks but left handed threads were used so that any "loose" nuts tightened themselves instead of spinning off.
