My newest vehicle is a 1970 Bug. Yesterday I went to open the glove box to retrieve the garage door opener and the knob came right off the lid!!! Shocked

You may be able to slip a card in between the top of the glove box lid and the dash, maneuver it over the latch and get the spring-loaded latch bit to push down. Probably need something stiff but more flexible than a credit card.

Use a feeler gauge - you can press the spring latch down as mentioned

Or grab onto that slotted tab inside the remaining latch with some needle-nose pliers and turn the latch to open.

It might be broken in there. The pix may not show it well but I cannot see anything I can grab to make it open. Sad

Is there an "exploded view" of the mechanism? Confused

I've also heard before that the way to get to the trunk when the cable breaks is to cut the handle, but I don't want to do that if at all I can help it. Neutral

Yes, you can cut the handle. You will need to cut out the middle section, like 2 inches of it. You are then left with 2 "L" sections. You can turn these CCW to unscrew them from the bolt on the underside. Not fun to do, since the bolt becomes a free agent after the tension is gone against the hood, so you need to supply tension until it is completely removed from the hood.

Then the hood will open.

Be careful, it is really easy to scratch the paint.

Or, it may be easier to cut away the lip and open the door. Like this. Just deep enough to break away little segments of material.

I'd help you but refuse to on the grounds that your topic title of "Help" is so dumb and non-descriptive.

should be able to turn whats left with a large screwdriver?
And when you replace it, source a NOS or good used one, aftermarket are junk and prone to break like what you have now.

With your number of posts, you should know better. A good descriptive title helps folks with searching too.

drill through it. better than slicing it risking to damage the glove box door and the lock is busted anyway, so if it doesn't work (it should) you can always use that axe.

Drill into the center, and if the drill bit doesn't turn the correct way to retract the latch, use an easy-out (or even a sharp pointed screw) to turn it the other way.
