I just got new wheels 15x7 with 3.75 back space. Tires are 255/ 60 on the rear. Seems the left rear runs closer in than the right. I bought a 1/4 inch spacer which did get the tire off the wheel well wall. The right side never did touch the wheel well wall. At the time the left was rubbing before I realized it when brakeing it felt like the drums were egg shaped loping when I came to a stop.
Now that I got the tire alittle off the wheel well when braking I still get the loping when brakeing. I can get all my fingers between the tire and wheel well .Just wondering on this swing axle does it make the tires turn in at the top when braking. Did not have this problem before these wheels. I thought for sure it was the tire rubbing. I thought maybe the shop that did the top may have drove it and hot dogged and messed up the brakes but I just dont think they would do that. Or do I need to order another set of back wheels with a different back space to be on the safe side. I have the tires at the max air pressure. On another note when I took off the Pro Stars that was on it , the back had 50's on it with adapters and I cant remember for sure but I think one side had a spacer on it. Edit : I went back outside and pulled the right rear tire off and measured the back space and it was 3.50, thats why theres more space on that side. But thats not what I ordered which is o.k. now that I see I need it, so I guess Ill order another one at 3.50. |

Got to remember this is kit car and body may not be uniform... Spacing may not be accurate as to way body was made and/or mounted, it may not be centered on chassis... You do what you have to do... First thing I would do is find out if body is centered and go from there...
Wheel should run true and rear suspension should not change clearance when braking unless situation cause extreme squat which is counter to extreme braking which tend to raise rear causing more clearance...
Jack up the offending side and spin wheel to be sure you don't have bent axle or bad wheel.... If you have pedal throb, you probably have brake DRUM issue...

Thanks Dale I' ll check it closer its just funny how this crap(braking issue) happens when you make a change. I think the 3.50 will be fine and I may run that 1/4 spacer also there is plenty of stud for them to fit, I'll just have to order another one. Just dont want the tire sticking out from under the fender if I can help it that is. |

If its a swingaxle, I'd check if it has the short or long axles. They put 1" longer axles on in 67 to increase stability and improve the ride. In 68 they increased the length of the axle splines so you can put on bigger brakes

I did some measuring from different points under the wheel wells and came up with that its even on both sides. Its suppose to be a 61 chassis by the number on the tunnel. I know people change things over the years but with the past history from what I know I think it has what came with it when it was built. It boils down to me getting another wheel with 3.50 backspace. My neighbor came over and I showed him a rub mark on the right side (3.50 side ) it was a small mark. He reminded that he stood on the foot step with my wife in it when we went to the last vw show so he wouldn't have to walk in to the show area. So I think the 3.50 will work and I will use the 1/4 spacer also just for some more added clearance and still keep the tire under the fender. After this to see if that brake problem is still there. |
