My van hasn't achieved a name yet but I'm thinking "Lucky" might suit.

Trees fell 20 paces from midpoint of garage where my Slate Blue '88 Westy is. The trees weren't huge but sure made a lot of noise. This property is covered in trees. I had wondered if renting (living) here was risky in that regard.

We have similar surroundings and gravity has been good to us so far.

I surely enjoy living here; its ideal and idyllic. But. Nothings perfect. Having a bunch of giant trees near my Westies is a concern.

My neighbour just now suggested the ivy growing on the trees in question may have been a factor. He knows more about the woods than I ever will.

I'd suggest that any Vanagon owner thinking of moving to an area like mine would be well advised to try and identify any "widow makers" (trees more likely to fall than others)

Neil.

You can't begrudge trees falling once in a while to live amongst their beauty...put in perspective , if you live in Orange County, you Vanagon could suddenly fall into one of the giant (***)holes and leave you that way...easy choice

We had a giant pine tree fall within a few feet of the buggy during last fall's hurricane, near Savannah.

We had every chance to camp elsewhere, but Nooooo......!

Living dangerously sometimes really is!

I refuse to acknowledge Assuan Brown as brown, except when misbehaving.

Rather, ours is decidedly "Performance Burnt Orange."

I did my suby conversion on my syncro in washington. With only a few hours of driving time in it, i was on the way back to my friends house on a calm sunny day. A back road in the woods doing 40 to 45 mph. I suddenly noticed movement on the left side of the road as a large rotten alder had picked this second in time to collapse under its own weight and fall across the road! Large meaning 12" or a little bigger at the stump. There was no stopping. I swerved to the right shoulder as much as possible and stomped the gas. Luckily the top was really rotten and the part that hit the van ( about 4 to 5" dia ) obliterated. When i got to my friends house there was bark jammed between the windshield gasket and top of the A pillar. And my underwear jammed somewhere else! When a tree falls in the woods and you are there to hit it with your van it does make noise. Laughing

Totally unrelated, but your subject line reminded me of that classic scene in the movie The Jerk.

Yes, it really does make a noise! Shocked

Brilliant story, timing can be curious. On a backpack in Colorado once, we sat eating lunch and commented on a frail tree about to fall. That very moment, it did!

Creepier still was a grave marker losing its top one moonlit evening in Crestone, Colorado. Thing sat there since the 1870s, but gravity intervened as we watched with flashlights. We don't scare easy but that had us dashing to the car!

This is on topic as our hangmate that night had a Splitty (Roy, you out there?).

Okay, perhaps I should be in that forum to truly be on topic. Very Happy
