I went and did it, I bought a bus. I'm a newbie to this so any help from the forum would be greatly appreciated!

I've been looking for a bus project for awhile, wanted to find something with a solid body and didn't mind doing some mechanical work to get it back on the road.

What I know about the bus:

It's a one owner California bus, kinda... It sounds like it has been in the same family for most of it's life. At some point over 20 years ago there was a fire in the engine compartment. At that time the bus interior, engine and trans were removed by the brother of the owner. It was sandblasted, all needed bodywork was done and the bus was repainted.

From what I understand the bus was then stored in a garage for the next 20 years until it was purchased two years ago. It was moved, intact from one garage to another, the buyer never started the project, and so it came to me.

It looks like all of the original parts are with the bus, along with some new replacement parts that the original owner collected over the years.

I pent the day taking inventory of what I have, images of all the parts and over 100 detail photos are here...

My Plan, let me know what everyone thinks...

I'm planning on tackling the project in the following order:

1 - Engine and Trans Clean Up
2 - Suspension & Steering
3 - Brakes
4 - Install Trans
5 - install Engine
6 - Electrical
7 - Interior install (Headliner Included)
8 - Window Glass

Does it make sense to do the brakes and suspension overhaul while the engine and trans are out?

Seems like it might be nice to have the extra room in the back.

Also...

In the past I have found it very helpful while doing a few motorcycle restoration projects to have access to the vehicle microfiche with the factory part numbers.

I have used sites like the example below to understand complex systems:

http://shop.houseofhondaparts.com/fiche_section_de...veh=190504

Is there a similar resource to this for our busses? I haven't been able to find one.

Any info would be great, thanks!

Welcome.
Wow, you have a project in front of you. You also have a boat load of parts and they are labeled! Bus looks good from the camera lens perspective.
Any idea about the engine? Was that the one that burnt?

From what I understand this is the original motor and trans. Apparently after the fire the motor was rebuilt, the PO ran it in a sand rail for a summer, pulled it from the sand rail and kept it with the bus.

It turns over... it's not stuck at all. I'd like to get a compression check on it before I put it back in the bus. I need to find a post about starting an engine when it's not installed.

Right now my plan is to keep it as stock as possible, I'm missing the exhaust. I'd also like to get rid of the external oil cooler. Kind of a bummer, looked like they cut a notch in the fan shroud to install it. Might need a new one or a patch job at the least.

The axles are missing as well if anyone has an extra set for sale let me know!

I would re-seal the engine (push rod tubes and main seal) or it will leak soon after driving. I have the 1/2 shafts you need. PM for details

Quick question for the forum, I'm starting to break down the motor...

Looks like my fan shroud was cut to fit an external oil cooler. I'm taking inventory of the engine tin to get an understanding of what's missing. Seems like I can replace most pieces of tin easily with aftermarket stuff with the exception of the front tin that works with a doghouse style oil cooler.

Sounds like a 71 only item...

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=206510

The part number is 211-119-515U.

My question is wether or not the oil ports that the external cooler attached to was an aftermarket item? Photo below.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And is this the correct fan shroud for the doghouse style oil cooler that was originally on the bus? Photo below.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Could I replace this with an upright air cooler, run the older fan shroud and the older style front tin? Just curious...

Thanks for any help!

Pretty sure that fitting in #1 is the bypass for that kewl external oil cooler. It replaced the factory oil cooler. I'd suggest getting a fresh doghouse cooler and all the proper tin.

You'll regret that decision, it's thin, fits poorly and often lacks critical internal deflector vanes, clean and paint your German stuff.

External coolers are not necessary on a properly built and tuned bus, the added hoses and fittings are also may more places to leak, keep it simple like it was when it came off the boat and enjoy trouble free driving. That's a non doghouse fan shroud from a single port, for best cooling you'll need a doghouse cooler, the adaptor to attach it to the case, a doghouse shroud and fan and the exhaust ducts that go through the front tin (you can modify your tin with a hole for the duct). All that stuff is available used although you may want to spring for a new cooler if you can't get the history on the used one, if it was on an engine that was making metal you don't need that in your oil. If faced with a number of shrouds to choose from the 75-79 fuel injected beetle unit is the best choice, it has a venturi ring to improve fan efficiency, second choice is a correct bus shroud with the larger scoop inside the fan volute that leads to the oil cooler.

A wire brush, some oven cleaner and degreaser and a ratlle can of black Tremclad/Rustoleum will make all the tin look like new.

Be careful the aftermarket stuff is not always made right. As Busdaddy points out with the fan shroud in the pic below.

That is an aftermarket adapter. You would remove that and install an oil cooler with the correct oil cooler seals.
Oil cooler seals

And is this the correct fan shroud for the doghouse style oil cooler that was originally on the bus? Photo below.
That is a not a dog house fan shroud. This is a Dog house shroud
You not only need the Dog house shroud. You need, oil cooler adapter, oil cooler and wider fan.

Yes
run the older fan shroud and the older style front tin?
Yes Make sure they did not cut out any of the cooling vanes in the older fan shroud.

Unless your masochistic, take Busdaddy's advice and avoid at all costs the aftermarket engine tin. It's simply junk and doesn't fit and is terrible quality.

There are several places that sell new doghouse fan shrouds made by VW of Mexico that are excellent. The other option is there's ton of good used original ones for sale too.
