Question for the forum. it looks like all of the insulation in my engine compartment was pulled out after the fire. Has anyone replaced this with something more modern? Any recommendations on material? Anyone running a bus without it?
Any info would be great, thanks!

It was tar board. You can find it from a bus being scrapped or buy the ones for bugs and cut it to fit. I used a sound damper up there in my 70' and then put the tar board back up. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

My 73 and 78 had a masonite type board with holes cut in it for pattern or whatever-- then that went over top some fibre type stuff- The masonite/cardboard-- stuff will break up easily so there is an extensive thread here on making a replacement- personally, I'm putting one together with woodstove heat tin having whatever asbestos replacement stuff glued to it , then the pattern masonite. I've watched several burning bus Youtubes and it seems many engine fires burn thru the hatch cover and set the interior on fire pretty quick. Having a fire barrier between the engine and the top seems like a good idea- still working out the hatch access problem though. That and Blazecut should give me a chance till the fondation ruiners get there. _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Some days I just sit.

What ever you choose, make sure it is fireproof.

I took inventory of the glass that was included with my bus over the weekend and unfortunately it looks like I am missing all of the vent windows, including the doors.
Question, are there any differences i should be aware of between the vent windows on bay window busses between 1968-1979?
Any tips on sourcing these other than the classifieds, are there good reproductions available?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! _________________ 71 Bay Window Bus

No mounting differences both front an back fit 1968-79.
Front wing: IIRC the Fastener (latch) knob changed.
Rear vent wing: there is a left and right, come in chrome or black.
Any tips on sourcing these other than the classifieds, are there good reproductions available?
Front vent wings are available, but I have not seen the rear vent wings.

By the time you source used rear vent windows, restore them and add up the cost of the seals.
You might be better off with new sliding windows that come with seals.

Installed the engine over the weekend. Did the engine and trans at the same time, worked really well, two jacks were definitely needed even with the ATV jack.
I got the everything lined up and the trans bolted in when i realized that I didn't have the engine mounts bolted to the mustache bar. Definitely a learning experience.

Ive got panes of glass. But the tab on the bottom is gone... if you think you can use them I'll sell cheap. _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

Great dog!!
At least that didn't
My worst was a nasty HP Turbo on a Volvo - first I was an idiot and didn't replace the CBV until it was installed, then after struggling 3 hours to install it on car, I found the diaphragm on the floor under the car - it had popped out while I struggled with the cover. I almost stroked when I saw it. _________________ .ssS! |

Got the engine started over the weekend!
Link
Also got my wheels on. Had the rims powder coated and found the tires on Craigslist. Hankook RA08 with less than 100 miles on them. Previous owner changed them out shortly after buying because they wouldn't fit after he lowered the bus.
I hope to have it out for a first ride in a week or so, just need to get the axles on. The transmission won't shift into first or second, I'm really hoping it's just the clutch adjustment! _________________ 71 Bay Window Bus

If it won't shift into first or second .....you may need to loosen and move around the plate at the base of the shifter. Search on it. I don't know enough to tell you what to do exactly but that sounds like it may help. |

Cool, thanks for the help. I'll definitely look into that this weekend.
It's strange, it will go into second when the engine isn't running... can't get it into first though. When the engine is running it won't go into second either, makes a sharp grinding noise. _________________ 71 Bay Window Bus

If it goes into gear with the engine off but not when running means that your clutch is not completely disengaging, you need to figure out what the clutch issue is. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Soooo.... I'm having some clutch issues... Any help would be greatly appreciated.
For reference this is the new clutch kit I installed:
https://www.partsgeek.com/ss/?i=1&ssq=W0133-1609526&x=0&y=0
New Bowden Tube
New Clutch Cable
New TO Bearing
Flywheel was machined by a local VW shop familiar with air cooled engines of this era.
Transmission goes into all gears with the engine off.
Transmission will not go into any gear with the engine on.
Engine will start in first with clutch pressed but lurches forward.
I have adjusted the clutch cable from fully slack to all the way tight, two turns at a time and then tried to start the engine, no luck.
I just can't get the clutch to disengage.
This morning I pulled the engine and transmission, thinking this might be due to a TO bearing that came off during install, no dice, looks fine.
The only thing I can think of is the clutch plate is a little wide, photos below of the original and the new one. The new one can be forced into an 8mm wrench but I need to press the two halves together.
Any idea on what the problem might be?
Old Cllutch
New Clutch

I'd bet my left nut that your problem isn't that extra 1mm of clutch material. _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

You can see where the clutch was rubbing the flywheel on the inner edge in this photo. I have no idea what else would cause that... it's a mystery to me.

Your bus looks great. I think it might be the throwoutbearing or maybe plate. I think sometimes those do not match up based on the centering ring. Use the clutch alignment tool. Don't forget the thermostat. I put one on mine and it made a world of difference. |

Clutch is working, went for my first drive over the weekend.
I covered the clutch issue on this thread if anyone is interested...
