Looking at this picture of an original, early T34, I am intrigued by the engine bay sheet metal. On other Type 3 cars, the engine bay is very open to the elements. This photo makes it look more like the sealed engine bay design of the Type 1 and 2.

Furthermore, the sheet metal on my '71 seems odd for a non-sealed bay, especially the front tin, which is pretty useless and adds a certain PITA factor the engine R&R. The curve does not match the engine bay.

Here is a gallery photo, non-stock in some respects but it shoes how open-air the T3 bay is:

So my question is, are the T34 engine bays pretty well sealed?

Does the front tin fit the body better on those early cars? There is like an inch gap on late models, which makes it pretty useless.

I've always assumed they kept the front tin as a handy place to anchor the fuel lines and accelerator cable, and for mounting the fuel pressure regulator on injected cars. You're correct in that it really doesn't seal the airflow in any way.

Not a dumb question at all, I asked the same thing when I got my '63 type 34.

I think that tin is a modified bug piece, although it has a 311 part number. I know I modified a bug one when I was building my blue Square years ago. It wasn't hard to do either, just 3 cuts and a bend, then weld in 2 side flaps to close the sides. VW did it all as a stamping though. That was for the oil cooler outlet air.

If you think about it, Donnie nailed all but that one when he listed what it does.

You should try a bus front tin, if you want to block off the opening at the front. They sit a full 1.5 inches taller, and close off a lot more. But... it's not made for a t-1 based engine.

The stock front tin on my 64 fit very well against the body. I don't have any pics of it though.

Not sealed at all, but it's a pretty tight fit.
