Haven't seen this on the Samba anywhere, just on Facebook, but I am sad to report that Bill passed away suddenly recently. I know no details at this time, but I know a lot of people on this site either knew Bill or received help from him through these forums over the years. He was a font of information and living local to him and knowing him he was always ready to answer a question over the phone, you just better not second guess him. Anyway, I for one and truly sad to hear the news. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Sad.. but.. it's the eventual circle of life for us all.
I never met the man.. . but we messaged at times to share information.
The last in January inquiring about his hiatus (and change of user name) from the Samba..
I'll quote..
"I got tired of being attacked by kids that could not spell Volkswagen correct telling me I did not know anything. Burnt out on samba but back now"
Bill May 1/16/2017
I surely respected his knowledge..
He was my main inspiration to create this...

Not really sure where now.. YOU NEVER KNOW.... thats their stength.. .. they seem to keep to the shadows.. THAT IS UNTIL a 1967 Beetle rolls in a VW event.. then its like beating off mosquito's.
Best to apply liberally to the eyes as they approach..

Made a point of talking to him at every VW event. So full of knowledge that even the seasoned mechanics among us sought out his advice. Sadly we lost touch the last few years. A VW artist has passed. RIP |

I first became aware of Bill about 20 years ago on another forum, BS. That's before Samba. We were unable to send pics so you had to explain everything but we had a good time anyway. At that time I had access to the last VW salvage yard in this area and sent Bill a few things, but if we were keeping score he sent me way more in particular the original type fuel clamps from dealership. Bill worked at the dealership when he was a younger man. It got to the point that without ever actually meeting him in person we became friends, we even had exchanged Christmas cards for awhile. I'm in the process of finishing up a ruby red 67 bug and have decided to call this car Bill in his honor.
Bill May will not be forgotten by me ever. If there's one thing he taught me was to ignore negative comments. Bill wherever you are I'm still trying and thanks for being a friend. |
