|

Hello, hoping there's a neat trick I haven't thought of. When I bought my ghia the engine deck lid opened when I pulled the release knob but the car was missing the rubber trim. When I installed the rubber piece, the deck lid no longer closed enough for the locking mechanism to engage. I didn't worry about it as first, but the other day I decided it would be nice if the lid was latched down and so adjusted the plunger depth until it latched when closed. Well, guess what, I can't get the lid to release when the knob is pulled. I made sure the release mechanism was lubed and (appeared to be) working. I suspect the plunger may be off center and stuck on the lip of the receiver Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated before I destroy something. |

You may have to get under the car to cut slots (with a dremel or similar tool) for a screwdriver in the small bolts that hold the female part of the locking mechanism down. Like this:
The latch can then be lifted free of the bodywork. View from the top (inside the engine compartment):

Brilliant, that beats cutting a hole behind the license plate.
Thanks you both! |

Am I correct that this is only a solution for a late Ghia which uses the flexible engine lid lock cable tube? On an early Ghia where the steel tube is welded to the engine bay sheet metal, isn't this going to prevent the lock lifting up with the engine lid even if the bolts are removed? _________________ 1962 Karmann Ghia

It isn't welded to the catch but the tube pushes onto the catch which would be enough to pull it up with the engine lid. But with the tube welded to the sheet metal further back I am not sure if it is going to lift up. _________________ 1962 Karmann Ghia

0k, I get ya Mellow. Perhaps the better "just in case" fix may be the small hole so you can pull the cable to release... or don't let it latch, like me |
Once you have the deck-lid open the "just in case" hole is such an easy preventative measure, a two minute fix.
If you drill the hole from the top you don't even need to measure...just pull the latch to one side and drill the hole underneath where the latch normally rests. To open, a screwdriver inserted at an angle and lever the latch open. A suitable rubber grommet as in Udo's original pictures and nobody will notice. _________________ John.
