Hi, I have searched topics but could not find anything specific on the steps to removing the fan housing in a Ghia to get to the oil cooler. I have read that you can remove the fan housing in a Ghia while the engine is still in the car to get to the oil cooler and seals. Has anyone done this and if so what are the steps. My How to keep your Volkswagen alive book says it can be done with the engine in the car and it didn't appear to be a big hassle. It also says you do not have to remove the rear decklid. The book's reference is confusing to me. Anyone know the steps here? Rather not pull the engine if I don't have too. Thanks!

Did the seals last weekend.

I kept the engine in the car and took the engine lid off. After that find one screw on each side that connects the shroud + one in the back on the passenger side (on mine at least). Disconnect the t-stat/rod and everything else connected to the shroud. I lifted the whole shroud + alt up and out after some wiggling around. Replaced the seals, added a hoover bit (doghouse cooler) and checked everything out (t-stat flaps).

The fun comes when putting the shroud back on! Make sure that t-stat rod pokes thru the correct push rod tube opening

Does the t-stat rod just pull out while the housing is still in the car or did you take out the housing bolts first and wiggle it to remove the t-stat rod? Also, I read that with a Ghia you do not have to take off the rear deck lid. My car is a 1969. Thoughts?

On my '74, the rod came out with the fan shroud. Don't know about a '69.

It was A LOT easier, to get to the oil cooler, with the engine lid off (4 bolts on the hinge... leave the hinge connected to the body but remove the bolts connecting to the lid).

To be honest, I don't know how you could get to the seals with the lid on.
