Hey Ratwell,
Steering box R&R on my '68 Doublecab is on my to-do list before my first test drive, so checking specs was no problem.
Mine had no kotter pin for the castle nut in question and was not threaded on all the way- it was cross threaded. Good thing it was on the to-do list!!! The bad news is the realiability of my info may be questionable.
I used a 30mm socket. My metric thread pitch gauge indicates 1.5 pitch. The ID of the nut was 19.5mm, presumeably totaling 20mm at the bottom of the threads. I think my threads should be a bit thicker than that but have been "smoothed over" a bit.
Hope this helps.

i have a 75 steering box on my 73 and it takes a 36mm socket.
the 68-72 is indeed a 30mm nut
i no longer have the OG 73 box but i imagine it would be a 32mm socket. |

I checked one of my 73 Westy parts busses VIN 2332035743 and the big nut on the arm takes a 32mm socket, so dansvans imagined correctly. |
