What are the tail light options for the thing that can be done without major modification. Pics would be great.

There are a couple lense versions for these Low profile style... All red(with clear reverse light), orange red and clear, tinted, or all clear....
These are the rounded version, there is also a more flat version... Direct swap with the stock elephant feet... The do have one less bulb(TURN, STOP/tail combined, Reverse)...

Your local VDub parts house should have them, if you're lucky enough to have such a retailer in your area...
Otherwise, search on the internet webs on EBay, Amazon, or CIP1 and I'm sure you'll find some options.

I HIgHLY suggest painting the inside of the housing with Chrome paint when they arrive(they come black), and using the new Sylvania Zevo LED bulbs....

Are these available anywhere, now?

Either I cant find them, or the ads aren't clear enough.

Although the low profile version of the “elephant” tail lights look cool, when you switch to this design you lose the rear side marker functionality of the original design.

Those are notorious for getting water inside.

Dont see them anywhere on the internet. Any ideas? Like the looks.

My kids use the old style ones as steps to climb into the car from the back!

What's wrong with the original looking ones?

I have had a set of those Hellas on my 75 1303 Beetle for about 8 years and I am so impressed with how well they have survived out in the Australian sun, the UVs down here just destroy everything, but not these Hellas. Luckily I have a brand new set ready to go onto the 76 Thing I am restoring.

That is the main issue with OEM vs non-OEM lenses. The OEM ones don't fade fast. The OEM ones are more reflective as well.
