In these two pictures there's a square hole with a screw hole right above the driver's side latch elbow when the rear hatch is closed. It looks like the same hole used in the door jambs for the dome light switches. Although if I put a dome switch there it doesn't quite reach the switch to trigger it.
Can someone tell me what this is for?

Looks like the right size. I wonder if it was to fit a light switch for an ambulance?

It's hard to say. When I got the bus at had no wiring. I just finished rewiring the entire thing with a brand new harness from Wolfsburg West and I was grousing around the rear compartment when I noticed it. I was just getting the wires in place for the defroster and I saw it there. |

So is this common? My bus is a 71. It makes good sense that the rear hatch would cause the rear dome light to come on but I hadn't seen that in my wiring diagrams. |

All Bay's have that hole, but I have yet to see a switch installed by VW there, but if you feel you need one go ahead. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Okay thanks for the info guys. So as far as original intent for that hole's existence, a light switch seems logical but VW never installed one, to the best of our knowledge. |

1973 Ambulance owners manual
My other thought was a warning light on the dash, for you're rear flap is open you are about to loose the patient.

Was working on the cabinets and thought I would grab a picture of the hatch switch trigger I installed for my alarm and some lighting. Nothing fancy but it gets the job done.
