Hey everyone,
I endevoured on restoring a 62 replica manx beetle with 72 beetle 1600 cc engine. I have finished the almost all of it but am a little out of my element on this engine and have a few questions about wiring and would like to show pictures of my progress. I am building a house in northern az and was going to buy a quad until I saw this thing on craigslist for 2300$ I figured if i spent another 1700$ to bring it to 4k I would have a kick butt vehicle to conquer the mountain trails up here, and the dunes down south if i wanted.
Here's a list of new parts things that were needed and repairs.
-New shifting coupler and Bushing
-Empi Shifter
-New clutch cable and accelerator cable
-New X-CELERATOR SPEED WHEEL pedal from classicbugparts.
http://www.classicbugparts.com/x-celerator-speed-wheel-kit-2/
-Monstaliner bedliner in "sans panties" od green for fiberglass body and black
monstaliner for floor and fiberglass sides underneath
-seats, roll cage, lights, wheels are prepared primered and shot with high
gloss black and clear coats,
-Master Cylinder repaired and brakes bled.
-New Marine grade blade fuse box and all new wiring.
-Fabricated new dash from Corrian as old was thin wood and warped and rotten.
-New Empi seats and VW seatbelts, empi turn signal
-New ignition coil, distributor wires, voltage regulator, battery.
-New fuel lines, inline fuel filter.
-Air filter
-LED Light bar
-Bluetooth stereo with 5 speakers
-5 swtich, with usb ports, lighter adpater and voltmeter,
-cb radio
-All new tires, wranglers on the back
all the wiring for systems of the vehicle work great, the engine turns over and I get spark to the distributor, and to the plugs, im thinking i dont have the timing/firing order in the correct position. The ignition coil was also getting very hot.
My engine is a 72, my carb has two connectors for what I believe is an electronic choke, diagrams i have seen show the starter connect to the + side of coil and the carb connects there as well with a daisy chained wire from the 2 points, is this correct?
Also the distributor had the only wire coming from it which I assumed was the ground and it was going into the first carburetor connector for the electric choke... so i disconnected from carb and ran to the - side of coil. I dont know what to do about the coild and the carburetor. I have attached pictures. I would greatly appreciate any help as i live in the forest and not alot of mechanics out here that know these engines or have the time. Thank you -Josh
PS. I am on my third phone since starting, and if I can find them will post the dash wiring when able if anybody cares...lol oh and the the buggy is really dusty atm... so the final shots here dont do it justice.

Typically if you have points in distributor, you should have one wire going to negative terminal (#1 or "-") of coil from distributor..
You should have one wiring coming from 'IGN" terminal of ignition switch going to positive (#15 or "+") side of coil, and from there to choke heating element on carb and to fuel shut off solenoid if carb so equipped...
(pic may not exactly like your carb, but will be similar)
Simplified wiring ...
