I need a new clutch bleed screw. After years of bleeding the clutch on the 'ole Vanagon, the screw is finally dead.
Never sure of the actual size, I've used a 9/32nd and even a little tiny novelty Crescent wrench to loosen and tighten the oddly placed nut.
If anyone knows the actual size and where I can get a replacement it would be great. Even this forum seems to be viod of good clutch bleeding info.
Possibly an off the shelf item at the local NAPA or Big A, I wonder???
This is it:

Looks like AutoZone has them - likely everyone else does too because Dorman sells a replacement.
If it is the same as a brake bleeder, then item 13905 according to my search but double check that before buying.

Not sure why you would use a 9/32 wrench on a VW - so far as I know there are only four non-metric threaded parts on a van.
As I recall a 7mm wrench is the ticket. I loosen the bleeder with a 6-point socket (or a flare wrench if there is not room for the socket) then whatever fits for the actual bleeding. |

According to VW technical drawings, its the same part as a rear brake wheel cylinder bleeder: M6X28
Might as well get a half dozen; as you found, they can fail/break

As usual the collective comes through.
I had to remove the screw with a pair of long Vise Grips. I got the clutch bled and it is shifting OK. Way better than betfore.
It shifts well into all the gears, except second. It just barely gets in there, but if I release the clutch, it stays there. Should I bleed again? _________________ Don't tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don't tell them where they know the fish.

That's a shift coupling adjustment issue , rather than a clutch issue, based on description. _________________ .ssS! |
